Actress in Guantanamo protest

BRITISH actress Vanessa Redgrave, who campaigns for prisoners at the US detention centre in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, today denounced alleged torture at the jail and demanded the repatriation of the inmates.

Ms Redgrave was speaking in the town of Venissieux, France, home to two of the prisoners held at the centre.

"The health and detention conditions at the Guantanamo base are a genuine reason for urgency," she said in French after meeting relatives of the detainees, Mourad Benchelalli and Nizar Sassi.

Ms Redgrave is co-founder of the Guantanamo Human Rights Commission.

You are correct, I applaud anyone that learns another language...as long as they learn ours first...

I come from an English speaking country mate, but I would certainly never have the audacity to tell others that they HAVE to learn the English language first!

That is one of the most disgusting sentences I have ever seen here on DU. And believe me I have seen many!

One day, you might actually learn that there is actually an entire world, with different language and cultures outside your borders.

But on that night, Vanessa Redgrave shocked nearly a billion worldwide television viewers watching the Academy Awards with the last great Academy Awards protest speech of 20th century.*

My dear colleagues, I thank you very much for this tribute to my work. I think that Jane Fonda and I have done the best work of our lives and I think this is in part due to our director, Fred Zinnemann. And I also think it's in part because we believed and we believe in what we were expressing - two out of millions who gave their lives and were to prepared to sacrifice everything in the fight against fascist and racist Nazi Germany.
