Three-month old Iraqi boy Ali Mohammed cries during his diarrhea treatment in the General Teaching Hospital for Children in Baghdad, Iraq (news - web sites), in this June 4, 2004 file photo with a small copy of the Quran on his pillow. Ali, who prompted an outpouring of sympathy around the world after he was photographed lying emaciated in the undersupplied Iraqi hospital has died, doctors said Saturday June 19, 2004. BAGHDAD, Iraq - A 3-month-old Iraqi baby who prompted an outpouring of sympathy around the world after he was photographed lying emaciated in an undersupplied Iraqi hospital has died, doctors said Saturday.

Ali Mohammed Jabbar — affectionately known as Baby Ali — died of septicemia, a bacterial blood infection easily treated if more advanced medical care had been available, said Dr. Haidar Hadi of Baghdad's General Teaching Hospital for Children.

"The chance of survival would have been much, much higher if he were in a European hospital," Hadi said. "He most probably would have survived."

Baby Ali's suffering illustrated the plight of Iraq (news - web sites)'s children, who are still lacking proper medical care after more than a year of U.S. military occupation.

2. Ali, I am so sorry
I am sorry that our nation invaded yours. I'm sorry that a corrupt world made sure that the Iraqi people were not given proper food and medical equipment for oil after Gulf War I. My heart goes out to your family, for they are the ones suffering now. You are at peace, servant of God, because you are in His loving arms.

4. We are monsters
I hadn't seen this photo before. It made me burst into tears. I can't believe what horrors have been inflicted on innocent people with our tax dollars and in our name.

Anyone who could still support * at this point is either willfully ignorant, pure evil, or both.

Poor Baby Ali. May you finally have some peace.

5. my god, he died of a sepsis?
My neonatal unit treats that all the time. Usually kids go home anywhere from a week to three months.

This is so sad. And that photo! Oh my god!

For some reason, this is just really hitting me hard. :(

7. OMG. That photo.
There is something old and wise in Ali's eyes. Did you feel that? I got the most eerie sense looking at Ali's eyes... as though he was.. as though there was something adult there. Tragic. I wish that AMerica was told and shown the many thousands of other children that were killed because of Bush's political lust and incompetence.

The child's eyes reminds me of the horrifying moment in Christmas Carol, when the Ghost of Christmas Future opens his robes to show the two children who represent the effects of the worst of humankind's actions. I'm not trivializing this death, but the look on his face, in his eyes speaks of something much more than a 3 month old child.

8. I agree Caliphoto...
I was on vacation when this story broke. I had no internnet for a week so it was lucky I saw it. The story and this photo were in a Knight-Ridder paper, the Charlotte Observer. I read it on June 6th and it haunted me the whole week. I kept the article to research when I got home. Little Ali died on June 8th. His eyes are indeed haunting and tell the tale of the bush* crimes against humanity in Iraq. He seems to be pleading with the world for help doesn't he? I am so ashamed that our country did this to him and THOUSANDS of others...
:(

was intentionally killed, just to provide a photo-op?! Get a heart.

30. I think the poster was saying that the photo was a photo-op.
I mean.. the poster must have meant that the photo was meant to stir those feelings... but the difference between this and a photo-op, is that the baby boy was not coached or cajoled into looking that way.

Shame on the poster if they were inferring that the photo was propoganda.. but it was just a photo of a very sick, scared baby who eventually died.

22. That sweet baby boy
His Eyes look like they have the souls of all of the innocent people that have died in Bush's war on oil.

It is a very eerie picture and when I looked at it a chill went down my spine.

17. Sarcastic or not, those words are extremely inappropriate and cruel
for this innocent child who was probably a Muslim killed by a "Christian" president.

10. Where in the eff is the HUMANITARIAN AID??????
I see there is enough money to fund bringing scores of troops over there to annihilate people, but not enough to take care of the children. This is fucking disgusting.

I am so sorry, little Ali, that our government cut short your life....

13. Oh, the Bushies.....
will just spin this and blame it all on Saddam or his "loyalists" or something other than who should really be blamed - the entire Bush clan. They are evil, evil people with no conscience at all. I am truly ashamed of my country at this point in time.

19. To me he looks like a baby that knows he will die soon.
It's in his eyes...they are haunting and show a knowledge of hopelessness. The eyes...why? Why am I not allowed to live a normal life, grow up and meet girls...graduate from school, fall in love...

Life destroyed before it even begins. :(

This one picture disturbs me more than any I've seen from Iraq.

24. The US is holding US 18 billion of Iraqi money.
I'd like to know why Iraqi hospitals can't afford to buy drugs or fix the plumbing. GIVE THEM BACK THEIR MONEY. This is an obscenity.

...Cockroaches roam hospital wards, and pools of urine in the corridors are not unusual. There is an overpowering stench from toilets that overflow into the wards; sewage sometimes runs through the corridors.

The doctors said U.S. Army medical teams and various humanitarian groups have come to the hospital in recent months and made lists of the medicine and supplies that are needed. Yet nothing has arrived.

About four months ago, the U.S. military brought to the hospital several Iraqi workers, who cleaned and painted walls and did some superficial repairs. They also took pictures with some of the children.

"Painting the walls is not so important. We need drugs," Faik said.

25. This photo is furiously shaking me. Baby Ali had to face madness.
This is one of the most haunting photos erupting. Rest in peace, little one. God, I am so sorry these WH thugs have commandered our country. I am in tears, and awash with sadness for these little ones.

26. I'm amazed he made it this far through
a pregnancy and occupation. Maybe if the mother had told them he was the product of an american soldier they would have gotten him the medication and mothers milk he needed to survive (my assumption is that his diarrhea was caused by poor water suply reconstituting a formula).

This is so heartbreaking. Another needless death caused by Smirk's madness and Cheney's greed. That poor mother, having to bury her baby.
