Lawmakers attend Moon ‘coronation’ in Dirksen Senate Office Building
Edited on Mon Jun-21-04 09:33 PM by NewJerseyDem
http://www.thehill.com/news/062204/moon.aspx

Coronations are not everyday occurrences on Capitol Hill — the Capitol being the people’s house, an indelible symbol of the republic, etc.

So it’s odd that a man was crowned in the Dirksen Senate Office Building earlier this year in the presence of several lawmakers and that the event is only now drawing attention.

It appears that at least some lawmakers were drawn to the event unaware of what would happen and who would be there. Others who the organizers claim were present say they were not.

12. That's an excellent question!
"Crowned what?" In all of the reports I've read it is never made clear, exactly, what he is being crowned as. King for a day? The new Maytag Repairman? The Official Rasputin for the Imperial Bush Court? I would really like to know!

These were not just Innocent stooges who accidentally stumbled into a coronation of the new Messiah- they were on the fucking planning committee.

6. Good. I'm glad to see this crop up again. Too special to have a
coronation of the self-described Messiah in the Senate Office Building with actual Senators participating.

Too rich. What you suppose these guys are up too?

11. so, uh, these lawmakers misled by Moon .......
were they also some of the same folks misled by Bush?

And why didn't they leave upon learning just what it was they were attending? What? It would be rude to walk out on a mad man?

I'm 40. Moon was a nutcase when I was a child and he's still a
nutcase. Nothing has changed. Nothing. ..well, except that when I was a child, people jeered the Moonies and labeled them for what they were...a messianic cult.

Gee, whatever could have changed in those years...

13. How about that Washington Post?
The Washington Post reported this today like it was the first they'd heard about it! :wtf:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A61932-2004Jun22.html
They knew about this a looong time ago!
See, the funny thing is, John Gorenfeld reported this story on his blog May 3rd,
http://www.gorenfeld.net/blog/2004/05/im-and-i-approve-this-messiah.html
a month and a half before Salon, and then as a contributor to the Gadflyer, Gorenfeld reports that he found it mentioned on The Washington Post's website on June 4th but the Post pulled it!

"Should Americans be concerned that on March 23rd a bipartisan group of Congressmen attended a coronation at which a billionaire, pro-theocracy newspaper owner was declared to be the Messiah – with royal robes, a crown, the works? Or that this imperial ceremony took place not in a makeshift basement church or a backwoods campsite, but in a Senate office building?

The Washington Post didn't think so. For a moment on April 4, a quote from the keynote speech was in the Web version of its "Reliable Sources" column. The speaker: Sun Myung Moon, 84, an ex-convict whose political activities were at the center of the 1976-8 Koreagate influence-peddling probe...

<snip>

...But not long after it appeared on the Post's web site, the paper erased the quote. Columnist Richard Leiby told me via e-mail that it shouldn't have gone out in the first place. The paper replaced it with breaking news about 'Celebrity Jeopardy!' with Tim Russert."

How very courageous of the Post ...and a big well done to John Gorenfeld! :toast:

16. Moonie leader 'crowned' in US senate
The United States senate was used for a bizarre ritual in which the Reverend Sun Myung Moon, the head of the Unification church, was "crowned" and declared himself the messiah in the presence of more than a dozen Republican and Democratic members of Congress, it was reported on Wednesday.

"Emperors, kings and presidents ... have declared to all heaven and Earth that Reverend Sun Myung Moon is none other than humanity's saviour, messiah, returning Lord and true parent," the 85-year-old Korean "Moonie" cult leader told several hundred guests at the meeting in one of the Senate's office buildings on March 23, according to the Washington Post.

He also claimed endorsement from Marx, Lenin, Stalin and Hitler, who had all been reformed and reborn through his church's teachings -- an idiosyncratic version of Christianity which rejects the use of the cross as a symbol and denounces homosexuals as "dirty dung-eating dogs".

17. Reverend Moon's Senate crowning raises eyebrows
NY TIMES NEWS SERVICE , WASHINGTON
Friday, Jun 25, 2004,Page 6

As a shining symbol of democracy, the US capital is not ordinarily a place where coronations occur. So news that the Reverend Sun Myung Moon, the eccentric and exceedingly wealthy Korean-born businessman, donned a crown in a Senate office building and declared himself the Messiah while members of Congress watched is causing a bit of a stir.

Democrat congressman Danny Davis wore white gloves and carried a pillow holding one of two ornate gold crowns that were placed on the heads of Moon and his wife, Hak Ja Han Moon, at the ceremony, which took place on March 23 and capped a reception billed as a peace awards banquet.

Davis, for the record, says he held the wife's crown and was "a bit surprised" by Moon's Messiah remarks, which were delivered in Korean but accompanied by a written translation. In them, he said emperors, kings and presidents had "declared to all heaven and earth that Reverend Sun Myung Moon is none other than humanity's Savior, Messiah, Returning Lord and True Parent."
