National Institutes of Health probed

WASHINGTON, June 22 (UPI) -- The U.S. National Institutes of Health has come under scrutiny by Congress, seeking to learn what's being accomplished with its $28 billion budget.

The NIH enjoyed bountiful funding in the past five years, its annual budget doubling during the period. However, amid fiscal deficits, this year's increase is small and questions are being asked about the collective's spending.

The House Committee on Energy and Commerce was scheduled to meet Tuesday to look into the outside activities of NIH scientists, many of whom already enjoy special exemptions from civil-service salaries and command salaries of as much as $200,000 a year.

The Wall Street Journal said lawmakers are expected to make public a list of 122 awards and prizes given to NIH scientists and administrators since 1999, totaling about $575,000. In 34 cases, House documents show, the money came from universities and other institutions that get NIH grants.

6. Nah - just blatant retaliation
for scientists being critical of the Wh/Gop politicization of use of junk science (and silencing research) to justify their ideological policies.

4. What more attempts at making scientists and administrators
accountable to the government if they don't tow the line? Privitization might possibly be thrown in there, but I think it is more about censure and towing the neocon line or else!

5. chickenfeed
should only go to chickenhawks. Not scientists who might actually discover something useful.
