American Italian Pasta will cut about 100 jobs, close plant

Kansas City-based American Italian Pasta Co. will cut its work force by 14 percent, or about 100 jobs; suspend operations indefinitely at its Kenosha, Wis., plant; and reduce inventory as part of a "rightsizing" plan for its domestic operations, the company said Wednesday.

American Italian Pasta (NYSE: PLB) expects to take a fiscal 2004 charge of $10 million to $12 million before taxes for the restructuring, the company said in a written release. It expects to save more than $12 million a year before taxes after the changes are implemented.

The company said it will:

Cut jobs at its plants and corporate offices in Kansas City "through attrition, the suspension of Kenosha production and selected job eliminations." The number of jobs to be cut in Kansas City is unclear, a spokeswoman said.

Stop operations at the Kenosha plant in mid-July and shift some production to its other three U.S. plants. The company has 48 employees at its Kenosha plant, the spokeswoman said.

3. The pasta harvest must've been particularly bad this year.
Perhaps global warming has harmed the pasta orchards? :silly:
