Shackled Saddam to Be Hauled Into Dock Within Days: Rubaie
BAGHDAD, 28 June 2004 — A handcuffed and chained Saddam Hussein will be hauled in front of an Iraqi judge within days to hear his arrest warrant, Iraq’s national security adviser Muwaffaq Al-Rubaie told CBS television yesterday.

“We’re going to have control of Saddam Hussein. We’re going to have two American military MPs to hand him over to four Iraqi policemen. They will put a chain (on him) and take him to the waiting room,” Rubaie told CBS anchorman Dan Rather.

“The judge will call his name, Saddam Hussein Majid. And they will bring him in ... open his chain, handcuff and take him to the judge and the judge is going to give him his rights and his defense and he’s going to issue an arrest warrant against Saddam Hussein.

“They’re going to put the handcuffs on him. Take him ... controlled by Iraqi policemen.”

1. Is anyone else thinking
what I am about Hussein? That is: Will he some how accidentally escape?

3. No way will the U.S. allow him to be shot
The pictures of Saddam in chains being turned over to the Iraqis and then put in handcuffs is designed to reassure Americans that the war was worth it.

On the other hand, if I were an Iraqi who hated Saddam with all my soul, I would be offended to see another Iraqi being paraded about in chains by Americans and then handed over to a government hand-picked by the U.S.

4. Assuming the trial goes as expected, and he is convicted
and executed, it will be instructive to remember that the latest U.S. appointee (Allawi) used to be tight with Saddam, and in fact was involved in "wet operations" according to the Russians.

"Hursh also said that the present Prime Minister of Iraq Iyad Allawi is a “butcher” who has shouldered his way to BAAS’s leadership by ruthlessly eliminating his political opponents.

According to Hursh, Allawi was one of the closest councilors of Saddam Husein in the period 1968-75, but after that “something happened” and he was expelled from Iraq."

I don't really know how reliable the source is, though. They misspelled Hersh's name, which never helps credibility.

6. Second attempt
to get Saddam away from the US by announcing it over the heads of the junta.

Make them squirm on this one as they dodge handing him over this quick, even to a picked kangaroo court with assurances.

There is a game going on here which probably is fairly real, of the Iraqis wanting indeed to rule their country in some fashion calling the bluff of * hypocritical propaganda. I really doubt they want this to happen fast with any hint of REAL Iraqi control and independence in the touchy process of trying Saddam without implicating certain US parties to his crimes.
