Government warns of late-summer gasoline price surge
http://www.cnn.com/2003/US/08/13/gas.prices.reut/index.html

As the U.S. summer vacation season winds down, Americans face a surge in gasoline prices, the government warned on Wednesday.

Pump prices have increased 5.5 cents a gallon nationally over the last two weeks, the Energy Information Administration said in its weekly review of the oil market.

"It's possible that we may be in the midst of another late-summer surge (in gasoline prices)" said the agency, which is the Energy Department's analytical arm.

Higher gasoline prices pinch the pocketbooks of consumers and create a drag on the U.S. economy.

2. Peak Oil Already???
Is anyone else getting the sinking feeling that Kenneth Deffeyes may be right when he says he thinks 2000 will be seen as the world's peak oil production year?

Deffeyes is a former oil industry scientist, professor at Princeton, wrote the book _Hubbert's Peak: The Impending World Oil Shortage_.

8. Do any of these people actually gas up a car?
Isn't this like warning the survivors of capsized ship that they might drown? Where have they been? Gas prices are already through the roof.

9. Doesn't this happen every summer?
Ever since 2000 (when the oil companies wanted us to vote republican), the prices have surged in the summer. My guess is that the companies are able to make record profits, with all the travel and the number of people who now prefer driving to their destinations than flying.

13. This must be what Bush meant when he said ....

Big Oil is going to recover those child tax credits they just passed out.

14. take the train.
I have to say I love the Amtrak ride from LA, anywhere north or
south in CA...try it. Great views of the ocean, air-conditioned, large comfy seats, tray tables, cafe car, clean bathrooms...and no hassle of driving. Sorry if I sound excited, but I hadn't ridden
a train in awhile...
