Rumsfeld's revisionist history: U.S. changes reason for invading Iraq
snip

"The coalition did not act in Iraq because we had discovered dramatic new evidence of Iraq's pursuit of weapons of mass murder," Mr. Rumsfeld testified yesterday before the Senate armed services committee.

"We acted because we saw the evidence in a dramatic new light, through the prism of our experience on 9/11."

It was an about-face from a man who confidently proclaimed in January: "There's no doubt in my mind but that they currently have chemical and biological weapons." (He was seconded in March by Vice-President Dick Cheney, who said of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein: "We believe he has, in fact, reconstituted nuclear weapons.")

If you saw ABC news last night Jennings showed a tape of Rumsfeld making both statements.

2. Didn't he also say
he did not know of anyone in this administration who said Iraq had nuclear weapons? My girlfriend and I crack up laughing when we heard it.

Anybody got a quote? I think I want to use it in my sig line.

3. Global Television (Canada)...
had the header "Stacking the Deck" and used playing cards to hilight the message about the * admin stacking the deck regarding wmds. Global tends to be more conservative than other media in Canada and the report was scathing on *. I LOVED it!!!

This is laughable. Even Repubs I know think they're all lying morons.

23. Rumsfeld has told the truth, for once!
This confirms previously published reports that on 9/11, as the Pentagon burned, Rumsfeld ordered the military to make plans to attack several countries with Iraq at the top of the list. Rumsfeld's orders is what led to the "Axis of Evil" speech.

All of the stuff we saw last year about WMD and UN inspectors was nothing but a pure smokescreen to hide from the public that Bush decided to attack Iraq back in 2001, perhaps even before that!

5. Re-writing history
Have you noticed that AWOL and the Rumbugger have been using phrases like "revisionist history" etc for a while now. Watch their language - it is how they betray their own actions by accusing others of the things they do themselves.

We'll be hearing these convoluted phrases from now on.

6. Where are our representatives?
Why isn't anyone standing up and calling the administration on their blatent lies? The Bush "coalition" is just hoping to sweep this all under the rug, and by election time, no one will remember that they pulled off one of the largest mass deceptions in America.

Any Democrat worth their salt should be using these contrary statements by Rumsfeld, Cheney, and Bush to their full advantage. TV ads, print ads, anything to get the message out that our "leaders" lied to us.

The results do not justify the means.

7. See! They Don't Always Lie.
Sometimes they tell the truth without knowing it!

The U.S. administration has abruptly revised its explanation for invading Iraq, as Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld asserted that a changed perspective after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks — not fresh evidence of banned weapons — provoked the war.

"There's going to be a lot of attempts to rewrite history."

18. The prism of 9/11?
What, did they suddenly realize that Saddam could have Baathists hijack U.S. airliners and fly them into buildings? What connection does 9/11 have to do with WMDs? Does Rummy think that box cutters are WMDs?

What 9/11 showed was that terrorists DO NOT NEED weapons of mass destruction in order to bring about mass destruction. And 9/11 carried no message about Iraq. But 9/11 was what the Dubya gang thought of as a convenient excuse.

11. This Bilge Is Intolerable
Edited on Thu Jul-10-03 12:46 PM by The Magistrate
These reptiles hold the people too cheap by half: you cannot take a year to whip up the populace to a fear for its safety and then expect them to forget what you taught them to fear in a month. Nor can you make your own statements disappear into the aether once they become inconvenient.

These reptiles lied to the people, and knew they were lying when they told the lies. They claimed they knew there was a nuclear program on the verge of a serviceable weapon that would hang a mushroom cloud over a U.S. city: that was a lie, known to be a lie as it was uttered; the only scrap of evidence for it was a forgery they knew to be a forgery even as they cited it in support of their lie. They claimed they knew precise quantities of chemical and biological weapons in existence, and the precise locations where these might be found: this was a lie, known to be a lie as it was uttered, each time it was uttered.

Now that the lie has been made plain for all to see, by their failure to produce any of these things they lied about the existance of, by the clear proof the evidence they proclaimed was forged, the people will not forget the fright they were put to without cause.

12. " are attempts to rewrite history"
quote from Bush regarding questions about SOU statements Iraq & nuclear weapons. "evidence in a dramatic new light" quote Rumsfeld. Apparently Bush has found a new buzz phrase & Rumsfeld is stumbling around trying to find excuses for his 'dramatic' statements regarding same subject. These guys are showing their appalling lack of ' intelligence' and ability to lead. The fog is getting thicker.

15. They Have Lost The Hand
Edited on Thu Jul-10-03 01:00 PM by The Magistrate
They bet blind they could contrive something to make their lies come true once they held that ground, and they have failed to do so.

They bet blind the good nature of the people would be moved by a liberated Iraq, and as Iraqis continue killing our soldiers the people do not give a damn if Iraqis are free or not.

14. This misadministration knows it’s in trouble…
They’re circling the wagons around the one item that is still somewhat untouchable inside and outside the beltway….”remember 9/11”. It still resonates with the ignorant masses and is a minefield for any that enter. The Dems have to hit harder…I can’t say I was all that impressed with the little that I saw on C-span yesterday. This charade and the lies are as clear as night and day….we see it. Our elected officials are not dump people on either side of the aisle…so what the fuck! Making decisions based on emotion where life and death hang on those decisions is extremely unsound and unprofessional. These idiots have got to go!!!

16. We knew they were revising history:
1. we remembered what they had said and compared to what they were saying;
2. they accused critics of 'revisionist history' -- a good indicator of what they were guilty of doing.

The big news is that the news media is finally starting to note the revisionism on their parts, and perhaps to call them to account for it.

24. Rummy was looking
hard pressed before the Senate inquiry and kept glancing at his "assistant" then, when pressed for an explanation, curtly said: "I've already answered that question".

He was looking concerned, though I wouldn't categorize it as worried. Crusty old farts like him are kind of hard to read anyway.

25. It’s not just Rummy that’s being the revisionist….
As the credibility gets wider and wider and wider…..

<http://www.news24.com/News24/World/Iraq/0,6119,2-10-1460_1386449,00.html>

Rummy’s statement:
"We did not act in Iraq because we have discovered dramatic new evidence of Iraq's pursuit of weapons of mass murder,"

John Bolton:
Iraqi “intellectual capacity” for producing unconventional weapons was sufficient justification for the successful U.S.-led war against the country

Paul Wolfowitz
"For bureaucratic reasons we settled on one issue, weapons of mass destruction, because it was the one reason everyone could agree on."

Ari’s statement on April 10th:
"We have high confidence that they have weapons of mass destruction. That is what this war was about and it is about."

I’m waiting for someone to just come out say, “we did it because we could and wanted to”….neener…neener….neener…
