Jerry Springer Announces TV Infomerical For Senate Run
Looks like it's going to happen!

http://www.whiotv.com/news/2323498/detail.html

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Television talk show host Jerry Springer held a news conference in Columbus on Thursday morning to unveil a 30-minute infomercial to raise funds for a possible U.S. Senate run from Ohio in 2004.

The commercial is aimed at boosting Springer's national fund-raising and won't be shown in Ohio -- initially, at least...

------------------------------------------------------

Also, check out today's "statement from Mike Ford, Jerry’s lifelong political guru", on Springer's website:

http://www.runjerryrun.com/

Today, at a news conference in Columbus OH, I announced to skeptical media that we are going to change the world of politics by breaking all the old rules – the rules that protect the powerful elites that run our country. And the rules that allow those elites to buy elections time and again. Today, we are breaking fundraising ground by testing a strategy whose style and texture match Jerry’s bottom up philosophy.... Selected cities around America will begin to see a half-hour political infomercial for Jerry Springer’s Senate campaign using a straight-to-the-camera pitch by Jerry and several friends...

what is your take on this? I always enjoy your analyses. I really don't know what to make of it. On the one hand, the folks most likely to be offended by Springer, would probably not vote for any democrat (your more traditional/religious right repubs). But within the democratic party might there not be a bit of "embarassment" that might suppress primary votes? If there is no other strong contender, it might make for a very interesting race - in the sense that I would guess a chunk of the nonvoting public might actually make it to the polls for him. Then there is the very entertaining mental image of the discomfort of some of the more uptight senators having to share space with Springer (imagine Sen Hatch on the Senator elevator with Jerry; or Santorum having to co-chair (one maj/one minority) a subcommittee; or Lindsey Graham (bad choice/example??) reluctantly having to recognize Springer (or visa versa) from the president of the senate's seat (when different senators of the majority party sit in). Oh, the images are rather amusing to conjour up.

4. I'm not offended by Springer. he's just a hustler.
But I am disgusted with him. I wouldn't vote for him for crossing guard.

9. I'm going to watch the informercial before making a decision
It sounds like I'd like his policies. But, I've always *utterly* despised his show even though I've thought for a long time that he, himself, is a good guy.

7. Hi Salin
I like Springer's chances, I have only seen the show a bit for a couple of times, not my interest. I find that the only ones who raise a rukus about it are the those puritans that can't resist watching it...

Anyway, he started real low in the polls, and is bound to go higher. the runjerryrun.com site has some commercial video's on it, and they look very impressive. In terms of his potential to win, it's just a matter of his changing minds. I think there's a good shot of his getting momentum, and if the votes turn out, he could then pull an upset.

3. Ah, the infomercial!
I can't imagine a better vehicle for really stating your positions than an infomercial... imagine, 30 minutes to talk and present your case in television show format! Effing brilliant -- hope to see more of this!

8. I found a blurb on the locations of the infomercial:

http://www.wtol.com/Global/story.asp?S=1355280
Featuring Cincinnati radio hosts and brothers Jene and Jerry Galvin, it seeks small donations and offers T-shirts, bumper stickers and CDs of Springer singing.

The infomercial will air in several U.S. cities including Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Memphis, Tenn., New Orleans, San Antonio and New York. It was not immediately scheduled for Ohio because of equal access concerns involving Springer's talk show. Dale Butland, a veteran Democratic strategist and Springer adviser, said he believed those concerns had been addressed and the infomercial would begin running soon in Ohio.

The infomercial explains how Springer's parents fled Nazi Germany for England, then moved to the United States when Springer was a young boy. The infomercial also addresses potential problems by Springer's talk show, which features guests who flaunt sex secrets and anti-social behavior. Springer repeats a theme he's voiced several times in the past few months, that his show isn't responsible for problems in Ohio with schools, jobs and the state economy.
