Saddam reached deal with US before attack: Primakov (caught months before)
http://www.dailytimes.com.pk/default.asp?page=story_25-6-2004_pg7_35

MOSCOW: Former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein cut a deal with the United States before the March 2003 invasion of Iraq, former Russian prime minister Yevgeny Primakov said in an interview published on Thursday.

“There was an understanding with the Americans, as paradoxical as it may seem,” Primakov told the Russian daily Gazeta in a lengthy interview.

“Why weren’t the bridges of the Tigris blown up when the American tanks approached Baghdad? Why weren’t Iraqi aviation and tanks used, and where are they now?” asked Primakov, a former head of the Russian secret service and a specialist in Arab affairs who was formerly on good terms with Saddam.

“They showed two soldiers with guns with palm trees in the background near the hole (where Saddam was reportedly hiding). At that time of year, date palms are never in bloom,” he said.

1. If he did cut a deal, it seems like the BFEE has reneged on it
What with the trial and all. Although, that would be par for the course for the BFEE.

2. Or perhaps the trial isn't what it appears to be?
It may look like a kangaroo court set up to send Saddam to a firing squad, but I think there's a lot that could happen. What if part of the deal is a post-conviction pardon for Saddam?

It certainly seems implausible that the GOP would want a former operative like Saddam Hussein testifying in a public trial.

7. I am amazed that Saddam made it to a courtroom alive
So, as you say, there may be other forces in play. A pardon is not out of the question. Maybe Saddam will eventually have some nice beach front property in Florida.

4. Another interesting exerpt:
Primakov was Russian Foreign Minister and made two secret visits to Iraq a few days before the Anglo-American invasion. He has placed a question mark even on the authenticity of the footage of Saddam Hussein’s capture on December 14. ‘‘They showed two soldiers with guns near some palm trees close to the hole where Saddam was reportedly hiding.’’ Primakov observes, ‘‘At that time of the year, date palms are never in bloom’’.

This would be dismissed as a conspiracy theory were it not for Primakov’s credentials.

5. Doh !
DUers picked up on how "funny" the Saddam capture photos were right away.

Once again, everything BushCo has touched reeks of Something Sleazy.

as well as the eyebrows...when did those lose the arch that could be seen in his earlier pics?...and why has he kept the beard? He was always clean shaven prior to the invasion...or so I thought...
