Stonewall Democrats issue warning to would-be candidates
http://www.advocate.com/new_news.asp?ID=9220&sd=07/10/03

A prominent national organization of gay Democrats has joined the growing list of groups putting pressure on potential presidential candidates regarding their support for a highly controversial constitutional amendment to deny marriage rights to lesbians and gay men.

1. Who knows who the four Dem sponsors were?
That's very despicable, and a certain deal-breaker for me, though I am heterosexual.

2. there are 3 now
One of the original co-sponsors lost his re-election bid in 2002. He was forced to run against a sitting Republican member in Mississippi.

The bi-partisan cosponsors of the Federal Marriage Amendment are: Collin Peterson (D-MN), Mike McIntyre (D-NC), Ralph Hall (D-TX), Marilyn Musgrave (R-CO), Jo Ann Davis (R-VA), David Vitter (R-LA).

Here's the link to the group pushing it. It really pisses me off that a former Democratic delegate from DC is part of the group--Walter Fauntroy

3. Absolutely, we must know which Dem Reps
support this garbage! I feel strongly that this amendment will never pass, but there is absolutely no point in its being put forward. For the love of god, this is a family issue, can no one see that!? This is just another facist/christianist stab at disenfranchising somebody....anybody.

4. The candidates are all supportive of gay rights
Howard Dean is currently the least supportive of gay rights and he feels that states have the right to approve civil unions - though he opposes a federal civil unions bill. It's the guys who are not running that are the problem.

5. The issue is not as simplistic as you make it sound
Ask yourself who voted for DOMA, a federal intrusion in what used to be a state issue?

Yet, many of those that voted for DOMA, also voted for ENDA!

Civil unions is a state matter, not federal. This is why I think DOMA is unconstitutional.

The best solution is an Equal Rights Amendment that includes gender and sexual orientation.

Howard Dean is currently the least supportive of gay rights

False statement on your part! Dean is more supportive of gay rights than Lieberman, Kerry, Graham, Edwards, and Gephardt.

I believe Kucinich supports gay marriage, but I'll let the Kucinich supporters verify this.

7. Kucinich, Moseley-Braun and Sharpton are pro-same gender marriage.
But, I suppose they can "afford" to be.

9. I watched a G/L show on our public channel the other day.
They fried Dean for breakfast.

They said that ,"of the leading candidates," only Kucinich was acceptable.

10. only Kucinich acceptable
I love all the litmus tests we put people through.

All of the democratic candidates are an improvement over Bush/Cheney/Ashcroft.
