Schwarzenegger Adviser's Criticism of Low Property Taxes Draws Rebukes

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Comments by a billionaire adviser to Arnold Schwarzenegger that California's property taxes are too low drew sharp rebukes Friday from fellow Republicans, and highlighted the dilemma for a rookie gubernatorial candidate who has revealed little about his views.

Among the chorus of critics responding to the remarks by investment mogul Warren Buffett was Democratic Gov. Gray Davis, himself stung by a poll released Friday that showed growing support for his ouster in the Oct. 7 recall election.

"Lord knows we have some things in California that cost a lot, but property taxes are not one of them and nobody is going to change this," Davis said at a Los Angeles elementary school.

Buffett, Schwarzenegger's economic adviser, bumped his candidate into a controversial light with remarks in The Wall Street Journal about one of California's most sacred tenets, the 25-year-old tax revolt called Proposition 13.

1. Hmmm...
I always thought Prop 13 was just another example of Republicans trying to cripple governmental services by limiting its ability to collect taxes.

This whole CA fiasco is turning into a circus...how did CA fall so far, so fast....The Terminator a serious contendor for the govenership and Rob Lowe as a senior advisor???

There is no fix for CA other than massive tax hikes or truly massive spending cuts...and neither party is going to raise taxes, and neither party is going to implement massive spending cuts...who will blink first?

CA is screwed...and as goes CA, so goes the country.

3. Regime Change In Washington!
California's fiscal problems will be greatly eased
when we can recover the $70 BILLION Enron stole from us.

The business climate will improve when we can be rid of the sky-high
electric rates that they stuck us with.

Even Bush's FERC admits that Enron robbed us, they simply refuse to enforce
the law. When we get a real President and a restoration of the rule of law
things will be very different!

5. Wrong. The Dems had the votes to raise taxes on our side
but can't do it without Repub votes due to our laws requiring a higher majority to pass them. Cuts have been made about as much as they can and still provide.

A handful of Repubs held the budget back and brow beat the rest of their party into submission. Everyone knows what needs to happen...some tried.

8. Did you hear what Steve Peace was saying on C-NBC
2 days ago he attacked the Bush administration for basically crippling the CA economy and he laid it out very nicely. He also said that if CA was aware of this, there would be a lot of pissed of people that would revolt against the Bush administration. I took that as a clue to educate the public.

4. So, having Warren Buffet on your team might not get you
elected!

That's too funny! Getting Warren Buffet, The Sage of Omaha, as your economic advisor and having a quote of his like this one get media play. Too, too funny!

And, BTW, I have a great deal of respect for Mr. Buffet, I just think he's probably not experienced at hard-ball campaigning.

7. That doesn't change the fact that Buffet is right
nor does it change the fact that Prop 13 is sacred to a lot more voters in this state than the Bible.
