Bush was told not to use Niger uranium claim on Iraq in SOTU speech by CIA
http://www.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0307/10/lol.06.html

DAVID ENSOR, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, perhaps I can provide a little bit of insight, Wolf.

We've learned from sources in the last day or so, that there were earlier drafts of the president's State of the Union message that were circulated, or this part of the draft, in which American intelligence was credited with having information about these attempts to buy uranium in Niger.

I understand from sources that U.S. intelligence officials went back to the administration and said, "No, we don't -- we don't think we can support that information, you probably shouldn't say that." And apparently, a decision was subsequently made to leave the assertion in the speech anyway, but attribute it to the British white paper, which of course had already publicly made the claim.

Now CIA officials are declining all comment on this, but I'm confident that the sources I've spoken to are speaking accurately about that matter.

One other piece of insight. The CIA did send a report widely through the White House, State Department, Pentagon and elsewhere in March of 2002 -- this was ten months before the State of the Union message -- in which it summarized the findings what we now know was former Ambassador Joseph Wilson, who the CIA had asked to make a trip to Niger -- he was a former ambassador there -- and look into it.

And he reported back that this was just not credible in his view. It was dubious, that he'd talked to Nigerian officials, they denied it and in any case uranium mines in Niger were basically controlled by a French company and other foreign entities, so that this was probably a bogus story.

Now, the report did not go to high-level people in the White House, it was not flagged to them. It was never in the briefing the president was given. But it was there ten months in the White House 10 months before the speech was given.

To the point of this story:

Now CIA officials are declining all comment on this, but I'm confident that the sources I've spoken to are speaking accurately about that matter.

What matters is that they have spoken on this issue. As long as the sources are verifiably CIA and in positions of knowing this information firsthand, then we can bank on its veracity.

One reason why they may refuse to speak publicly on this issue today is that an official investigation may be in the works. We'll just have to wait and see.

7. Scooter Libby !?! WTF?
Had to google this name, and found a link to DU Top Ten Idiots - March 5, 2001:

Lewis "Scooter" Libby - Who, pray tell, is Lewis "Scooter" Libby, and why does he warrant the number four spot on the chart this week? Well, Libby spent countless hours reviewing legal documents and interviewing witnesses in a search for cracks in the government's tax evasion indictment of Marc Rich. He spent two years traveling around the world, met with Rich at least eight times in Switzerland, and has received over $2 million for work on Rich's behalf. So how come he suddenly can't make up his mind about his client's innocence? Maybe it has something to do with his current job... as Dick Cheney's Chief of Staff.

29. Lewis "Scooter" Libby
is a founding member of PNAC, along with his boss. He is the one that wrote the first draft of Powell's UN presentation. You know, the one that Powell through up in the air and said; "I am not reading this. This is bullshit".

4. Wow, CNN sources!
I'm starting to get my hopes up. Better get ready for duck and cover time. Or is it possible that once the tide turns for this cabal, that America will rise to the occasion and prove to the world, that we can survive a midterm change of government? We've done it before, we can do it again.

5. This is why
The UK Foreign Affairs Committee could soon be explosive. They asked the UK gov to tell them exactly when they knew the uranium papers were forged.

Either:

1) The US government deliberately didn't inform the UK that the uranium claims were bogus the moment they saw them publish it in September.

Or..

2) The US government did inform the UK they were bogus, and the UK can prove the US is lying when it said it didn't know before the SOTU (because they'd have evidence of being informed before that).

Either one has grave conclusions.

8. I smell a CNN "rat." Sure hope the source was not Wilkerson!
Be ready for a set up. Since CIA will not talk anymore, I worry that they are being forced to come up with a "plausibly deniable" story.

15. Mark my words
This is how we will know the story is about to break, Uncle Dick resigns for health reasons. Until then it’s just going to be a bunch of false starts with no follow through. And for the people that think there will be an impeachment, don’t kid yourselves, Chimp & Co, will hold on for as long as they can, but they will make sure to scoot right out of town with a presidential pardon (from Ford 2.0) when the story starts to approach critical mass.

13. Dammit, now I can't find that story. Anyone?
The one that was on Capitol Hill Blue, where the ex-intelligence guy says he was actually present for two meetings with Bush where they told him the Niger documents were forged, and then Bush got angry and said he know it was true and if they couldn't prove it then he'd find someone who could. Story is nowhere to be found now.

21. It's a dismal thing, the chain of succession....
I mean, look what we have to look forward to if Bush and Cheney get the boot:

Vice President
Speaker of the House
President Pro Tempore of the Senate
Secretary of State
Secretary of the Treasury
Secretary of Defense
Attorney General
Secretary of the Interior
Secretary of Agriculture
Secretary of Commerce
Secretary of Labor
Secretary of Health and Human Services
Secretary of Housing and Urban Development
Secretary of Transportation
Secretary of Energy
Secretary of Education
Secretary of Veterans Affairs
Secretary of Homeland Security

That list just fills me with dread...

"Okay, first we get Mr. Vivisector, then we get The Hammer..."

23. Anybody reading the COLIN POWELL thread?
HE SAYS that the CIA "should have warned us about that uranium shit, and they dropped the ball, so there!"

He's lying before our very eyes! And they expect the people to buy it. And, likely, the people will.

27. Has anyone seen this??
From the Guardian today. Seems like big news, to me:

White House 'lied about Saddam threat'

Julian Borger in Washington
Thursday July 10, 2003
The Guardian

A former US intelligence official who served under the Bush administration in the build-up to the Iraq war accused the White House yesterday of lying about the threat posed by Saddam Hussein.
The claims came as the Bush administration was fighting to shore up its credibility among a series of anonymous government leaks over its distortion of US intelligence to manufacture a case against Saddam.

This was the first time an administration official has put his name to specific claims. The whistleblower, Gregory Thielmann, served as a director in the state department's bureau of intelligence until his retirement in September, and had access to the classified reports which formed the basis for the US case against Saddam, spelled out by President Bush and his aides.

Mr Thielmannn said yesterday: "I believe the Bush administration did not provide an accurate picture to the American people of the military threat posed by Iraq."

He conceded that part of the problem lay with US intelligence, but added: "Most of it lies with the way senior officials misused the information they were provided."
