'Mercenary firm' shuts up shop

Cape Town - A recruitment company that was trying to hire 500 mercenaries in the Western Cape appears to have shut up shop in a hurry.

According to a neighbour, staff at NLJ Staff Placements moved out about 14:00 on Thursday. They carried out cardboard boxes and drove off, said the woman.

According to him, those involved initially heard they would be guarding Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe.
But, he said he pulled out when he realised "they would be deployed in the DRC".

Wellington - A bill making it an offence to recruit, use, finance or train mercenaries was passed by New Zealand's parliament on Thursday.
The Mercenary Activities (Prohibition) Bill also makes it an offence to take part in a war, or an act of violence, as a mercenary.
