TALLAHASSEE - Overshadowed by the campaigns for the White House, Florida's Republican U.S. Senate race is awash with candidates, millions of dollars and is among the most hotly contested races in the nation because it could help tip the balance of power in Washington.
But, with only 41 days to go before the Aug. 31 primary, Florida Republicans are barely tuning in, according to a survey of likely Republican voters.
An overwhelming number -- 44 percent -- remain undecided, according to Atlanta-based InsiderAdvantage's poll of 300 likely Republican voters statewide. It's the first recent statewide survey of the Republican race unconnected to any of the candidates.
Former congressman Bill McCollum leads with 19 percent support. Former U.S. housing secretary Mel Martinez is next with 14 percent, and Coral Gables millionaire Doug Gallagher is in third place with 11 percent -- results that track recent surveys conducted by some of the campaigns and the Florida Medical Association. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus six percentage points.
