Senate Committee Approves Bush Nomination (Appeals - 4th Circuit)

A Senate committee on Thursday unanimously approved President Bush's nomination of Allyson Duncan for a seat on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit, which includes West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina and South Carolina.

If confirmed by the full Senate, Duncan would be the first black woman on that circuit and only the third woman. She also would be the first North Carolinian to sit on that court in more than 20 years, senators said. Former Sen. Jesse Helms, R-N.C., feuded with Democrats for years over choices to that court, and North Carolina has become the only state without representation on the U.S. Appeals Courts.

After Thursday's approval by the Senate Judiciary Committee, the nomination heads to the Senate for confirmation. ---
