Bush targets marijuana smokers
Bush targets marijuana smokers

Richard Luscombe in Miami
Sunday July 25, 2004
The Observer

New super-strength marijuana readily available on US streets is prompting the White House to change direction in its war against drugs.

Research from the government-sponsored Marijuana Potency Project claims today's cannabis is more than twice as strong as in the mid-Eighties, leading to greater health risks for those smoking it at increasingly younger ages.

Now President George Bush, who had already promised a more aggressive campaign against substance abuse, has ordered that resources be allocated to fighting so-called 'soft' drugs instead of concentrating on harder forms, such as heroin and cocaine.

1. This is SO retarded
Edited on Sat Jul-24-04 11:48 PM by troublemaker
The reasoning here is dangerously close to the old joke (sometimes attributed to Yogi Berra) of a guy at a pizza parlour asked whether he wants his pizza cut into six slices or eight slices. He says, "Better cut it into six slices. I don't think I can eat eight."

What the hell does potency per gram have to do with anything? People smoke pot based on how high they want get, not based on daily consumption of some certain mass of plant tissue.

If beer was weaker people wopuld drink more of it. If it was stronger they would drink less.

It's OK to Smoke Dope, England Fans Told
The Guardian; June 11, 2004
by Paul Kelso

Portuguese police officers will turn a blind eye to England supporters who openly smoke cannabis during Euro 2004, having decided that a stoned crowd is easier to control than a drunk one.

107. Well, I don't think your beer analogy holds up
Alcohol is notoriously easy to over-indulge in; drunk people just keep drinking, given half a chance. But on marijuana, I agree...once you're high, you're high. Pot smokers I've known (including myself many years ago) don't typically smoke and smoke and smoke until they pass out, they just get high and that's it. So I agree, this is assanine, and probably just a response to the loosening of marijuana laws in the UK and Canada.

Why don't we spend all this money on recovery programs for people with drinking problems or cancer from smoking?

69. It's a form of oppression of Pagan values
It's that "crazy Hollywood bunch" who smokes weed and eats wheatgrass.

I'm reading Davinci Code and what seems clear to me is that this is a long battle against balance. Goddess power is oppressed and nearly eliminated. Marijuana goes along with herbs that are the tools of "witches".

Right now we are in a patriarchical society that is out of balance and ruining the planet. Of course MJ is just another device that they know a segment of the society likes and it can be used to oppress them. It';s the basis to get into their homes, find "violations" and lock them up into system of slavery with a higherr profit margin.

MJ was first made illegal by the Texans for that very reason - because they knew mexicans had it and it was a way to make them all suspects, subject to search, seizure and deportation.

25. Oh, yes.
The most dangerous drug out there today. I live in the meth capital of the U.S. and let me tell you, this stuff is what the feds should be focusing on. I've seen this drug do horrible, horrible things to people--good people. I know someone who was married, had kids, a house and a couple of dogs. Somehow between the end of last summer and Christmas, she got into meth and has become a completely different person. She's lost everything and is on the streets interacting with scumbags who would kill her and dump her body in the river for a couple of bucks. Everyone's tried to help her, to no avail. All she wants is the meth. Marijuana? Please!

I despise meth and meth users, and I've seen first hand the dehumanizing effect meth has on people. But I thought my town (Portland) was the meth capital.

Then it dawned on me that EVERY town is the meth capital. I think it's everywhere.

Potheads are no threat. Tweakers will kill you for nothing.

51. From Sea To Shining Sea, Tina reigns!!

I thought Chelsea was the Meth capitol of the world!

I hate Speed, Meth, or as my neighborhood pathetically calls the shit..."Tina."

I can't hate meth users, though. I would be speaking to no one, except my partner! Only a handful of people I know are not hooked on this drug. Somehow, my community was persuaded Meth was just another harmless party drug. Meth supplanted XTC around 2000, right after the dissolution of The Morning Party.

Has anyone ever noticed how Meth makes the user act like A Right-Winger? Aggressive, Hostile, Brutal, Filled with Hate and acting it all out, frequently in a really, perverted sexual arena.

Hitler was a meth freak.

Does anyone think the emigres, whom Operation Paper-clip so graciously transplanted to our country could have brought cook-books with them to their new homes in California?

Meth is the drug problem; marijuana is the solution.

Meth users have a PROBLEM and need HELP not to be judged. With the proper help and motivation, meth users can become productive citizens again. How do I know this? Because I was a meth addict. I've been clean for a year now and will never touch the stuff again. Oh and by the way, I never killed anyone when I was on it.

130. Thanks...
I appreciate that. You are right, it's very sad. And it only makes things worse when our idiot president wants to put more money into fighting pot instead of educating people about meth. We get all this crap about how bad marijuana is (I'm not saying it's harmless) and then people try it and assume all drugs are not very harmful. I hope that when Kerry is president he will de-emphasize marijuana and fund more education about meth, crack and heroin so that people will know
better than to harm themselves and others.

49. I disagree with you
I think that I live in the meth capital of the US (NE/TN NW/NC rural). This area has such a high concentration of meth labs that my county has stated that 70% of children live in meth homes. The stores cannot put Sudafed or gasoline additives on their shelves because of theft. A child came to school one day and said that he and his sister had to sleep oputside in a tent because of what daddy was cooking in the trailer. I do agree with you on one thing; this is a horrily terrible drug that ruins everyone it touches. Marijuana is a non issue.

59. are you in mason city iowa?
Edited on Sun Jul-25-04 10:02 AM by leQ
on edit: grammar
after reading the rest of the posts, i had to think for a minute that maybe mason city isn't as bad as they say.

and to see the horrors of what this drug can do had become such a daily routine for me that it was (2 years ago) almost refreshing to see people without skull-like eyes and weighing more than 150 lbs.

really. it was hard, there was a lot of crime (usually brought to the hood from outside the area), but it's still a climate that has virtually been written off by the city except when they want to arrest someone.

lately, however, we have become a better community by organizing a northend association and cleaning up parks and abandoned houses. new folks are starting to move in. this isn't a war against the previous residents (not at all like you see on tv), but rather a cooperation. making drug addicts see that there's a better life, and able to achieve it (and that my friends is the stumbling block presently in these programs that fail), creates a good sense of self esteem. and people with good self-esteem aren't up to kill themselves with meth.

what's really making our stoid officials shit their pants is that it's not costing the city a dime.

I personally think that drug prohibition is a violation of states rights (so far as domestic growth and distribution is concerned).

Marijauna is NOTHING compared to alcohol, heroine, nicotine, crank and the #1 addictive substance in the nation ....

CAFFIENE!!!!!!

The bans of Mary-Janes brother hemp is absoluetly ridiculous since they are easily distinguished from one another. Hemp could save our forests since the fiber board it produces is actually lighter AND stronger than cut lumber. It could make amazing clothes that put cotton to absolute shame. And of course, we could fuel our offices with paper and our vehicles with diesel using cheap and easily grown HEMP.

We need leaders who will speak openly about this issue (like former Massachusetts governer (and ironically a Republican)) William Weld. Our politicians need to follow the Moore doctorine and not only stick to their guns, but fire them twice as much when the right wingers criticize them.

If the report on NPR a few months ago is to be believed, in many areas of the US, you can get very pure heroin cheaper than you can buy BEER. Real live heroin, pure enough to snort. A huge problem...kids who would never shoot up will snort this shit.

Not to mention methamphetamines, and hillbilly heroin.

But let's worry about pot first.

19. The huge problem is the law against it.....
Like all illegal drugs, the problem with heroin is that the black market drives the price up, making people do all kinds of crazy shit to obtain it. The strength and quality are unknowns because there is no regulation, making it easy to overdose.

Just say no doesn't work. People like to alter their perception. Heroin feels good. It is relatively safe if used carefully, though it is very physically addictive. It will remain popular even if it is illegal. We should be allowed to do whatever the hell we want if we aren't harming anyone.

Stop the lies, educate people about the actual effects of drugs, and make them all legal and available in regulated doses. Let people make their own decisions as to what they want to use.

OK?

When the Bush Administration can't deal with a problem they change the subject. Don't worry about the war in Iraq, the war in Afghanistan, the fact they still haven't found bin laden or the anthrax terrorist(s). Instead panic that your kids might be smoking super-pot. I assume this means more raids on hospices full of medical marijuana users.

14. He's doing this because ...
Bayer has a new prescription drug developed from marijuana and Bush doesn't want the stuff on the street to cut in to their profits. That's why the Bushies have been blocking every attempt to legalize marijuana - they knew the pharmaceutical companies were developing something and if pot was legal for medicinal purposes, their drug company buddies wouldn't make any money. It's the same old story - he never has a "noble" reason for doing anything; it's always about money.

If you haven't heard about the new drug, read this

26. Clamp down on the sick
That is what the plan is to find/arrest people I heard. They will get the names from the "legal" clubs that are around and then they will also have themselves the source - takes them right to it.

I have a good friend with multiple sclerosis that could greatly benefit from legalized cannabis or Sativex. This person had difficulty swallowing and severe digestive problems and can't take hardly any pain medication so lives in chronic/severe pain basically and has severe spasms all over his body. 17. Compare this to Kerry
From the Rolling Stone interview:
-You have talked in the past of smoking pot when you returned from Vietnam. What do you think of the way the pot laws are prosecuted today?

-We have never had a legitimate War on Drugs in the United States, ever, and we won't until we have treatment on demand for addiction and until you have full drug education in our schools. The mandatory-minimum-sentencing structure of our country is funneling people into jail who have no business being there.

-And every year, the number of people arrested for marijuana offenses goes up.

-I've met plenty of people in my lifetime who've used marijuana and who I would not qualify as serious addicts -- who use about the same amount as some people drink beer or wine or have a cocktail. I don't get too excited by any of that.

-Would you favor decriminalization?

-No, not quite. What we did in the prosecutor's office was have a sort of unspoken approach to marijuana that was almost effectively decriminalization. We just didn't bother with small-time use. It doesn't rise to the level of nuisance, even. And what we were after was people dealing with heroin and destroying lives, and people who were killing people. That's where you need to focus.

It should be legal for recreational use, as well. I smoked reefer for a good number of years (emphasis on the word "good"). My wife and I gave it up (along with other substance use, in order that our children would not learn smoking, drinking, and recreational drug use from us. When they leave the house, however, I could see myself returning to my marijuana usage. No tobacco, and no (or very little) alcohol, however.

30. Didn't Hearst try that already

Orchestrated Pot-hysteria

And in analogy with the Bayer-theory, the Marihuana Tax Act was also lobbied by a chemical company (DuPont). Only then the goal was to make the plant itself illegal, because of the strong fiber that was very suitable for the production of rope. DuPont had recently taken a patent on a synthetic plastic for the production of rope.

from the link:

A statement by their corporate president hints at DuPont's intentions:
"Synthetic plastics (made from mineral, chemical, petroleum, and fossil fuel deposits) find application in fabricating a wide variety of articles, many of which in the past were made from natural products."

41. There ain't nothin' new under the sun, here.
Anyone remember the Great Drout of '88? People were smoking stems and seeds that election year. (I of course had already taken Nancy's advice and "just said no.")

It was also popular in those days for Drug Warriors such as my high school basketball coach/gym teacher/substance abuse banshee to knock around a hauntingly similar statistic: that the marijuana commonly available in 1988 was three times as powerful as the best "sinsemelia" of the 1960s.

We were also programmed to know that 1960s-era red-haired sinse was supposed to be 5% THC. The stuff of 1988 therefore would average around 15%. Doubling that figure would put today's flowing torrent of hydroponic mind melter at a spectacular 30% THC. And of course, it's freely available... probably to mere children, even.

Unless of course someone was lying then... or now. Or, maybe it's the same people who were lying to us then who are also lying to us now.

43. Marijuana is the basis for a police state
...making possession of this innocuous weed a crime, and the pipes and papers necessary to smoke it a crime, gives police the opportunity to put otherwise law abiding citizens under arrest and introduce them to the labyrinthine tentacles of the criminal injustice system.

If it weren't for marijuana, a good portion of the criminal justice system would have nothing to do. A large portion of those pretextual stops for a broken tailights and failure to maintain lane would end up in no arrests, no fines, and no revenues for the police, the courts and those proliferating probation contractors.

If it weren't for marijuana, when Afro-Americans and young persons are pulled over in their cars or stopped on the street on the basis of racism or some unfounded suspicion, the police would have absolutely no power over them.

The great thing about marijuana and the so called paraphenalia laws is that when you don't even have any marijuana, you can still go to jail or get stuck in the paternalistic and oppressive police state system.

As I keep saying, MJ prohibition is the cornerstone piece of social control which keeps the rest of the American cultural trance in place. It was the first purely discretionary policy enforced by cold war psyops, and some in the field believe that if it falls, so will other core socially enforced values.

The other elements of the cultural trance for (not necessarily *of*) Americans is hatred for the other, a belief that America is morally superior--not based on facts, the superiority of the individual over the society, and the taint of being needy.

Sadly for our sake, pot was labled a 'commie' drug. Cocaine was produced by right thinking central and south americans and distributed with the help of the CIA. Smack is Afghanistan's only marketable resource, same as it ever was...

So folowing the big thread, commie drugs (Pot, Acid, E) bad, patriotic drugs good (alch, tobacco, speed, heroin, oxyrush). This is one of the few ways of looking at Bush's actions that makes any sense. Though I am willing to admit that their is no sense to this, except a Rove/Ashcroft/Bush bit of 'head of the chicken' ju-ju that is off the rational radar screen.

Marijuana prohibition has, from the beginning, had nefarious politico-economic objectives. Every single large industry you could possibly name is lined up against the little ole' hemp plant because, shocker, it cuts into their bottom line.

Now they use it to inflate the for-profit prison system and is, IMO, slavery reincarnated.

As with all propaganda, there is SOME truth to what the B*sh folks are trying to say. Cannabis that is cultivated the way, say- fruits and vegetables have been- taking some of the best parts of the crop for clippings/seeds, etc. to produce offspring that is, on the whole, better than the original crop. Repeat this, over a period of 30 so years and add in more experienced growers and agricultural techniques and you could end up with some pretty potent cannabis.

HOWEVER, the entire premise for their argument is questionable at best. Stronger cannabis=greater health problems? I'd say it would REDUCE the negative health effects because people have to smoke less of the stuff to produce the same high (less intake of carcinogens, etc.)

Stronger pot equals greater health risks? SHOW ME THE DATA! But that, unfortunately, will never happen. Activists and researchers have been trying to get permission from the government to conduct studies on the plants health benefits/risks for decades to no avail. In fact, the one time the government directed a study, (the Nixon administration, who wanted to prove its theory that cannabis was harmful to the immune system) it was discovered that cannabis actually REDUCED the size of cancer cells and tumors.

Here's and article about a new study (conducted in Spain,) which contains some information about the 1974 study as well:

74. "any detectable amount"
Edited on Sun Jul-25-04 12:09 PM by SOS
Cannabis is detectable for 30 days because the human body identifies THC as food (a fat molecule) and stores the molecule in the liver. That's because cannabis is non-toxic, unlike other drugs. The most toxic drugs (nicotine, alcohol, opiates, meth) are recognized as poison and are expelled very quickly. People have to readminister toxic drugs frequently since the drug toxins are rapidly cleaned out of the system.

So this "any detectable amount" thing is directed at pot smokers. Someone who yesterday was drunk and high on meth would get a pass, while someone who smoked a joint 3 weeks ago would be arrested. The people who sponsor this type of legislation are really twisted.

73. Does anyone still care about weed?
Simple possession's a misdemeanor in most states now -- even Texas. Fifty dollar fine, if they bother to write the ticket at all.

I work in an office full of cops, DAs, probation officers, COs, and the like -- pot's like a joke around there, really almost considered to be a complete waste of time.

76. What a waste!
Children are going hungry, people are losing their jobs, seniors, (and folks like me, for instance), can't afford their medicine, and they are going to dump more money into going after marijuana use? Sorry about the bad grammar, but this pisses me off to no end. There is something seriously wrong here.

...that regular pot doesn't? What kind of health risks, except for overeating, spending all your time watching "Dude, Where's my Car," etc.?

This is such a load of shit. But I'm sure that's already been said.

101. I've Always Thought
that this supposed "super-strength" weed would be MORE healthy, because the unhealthy part of pot is that you have to smoke it. Stronger pot = less you have to smoke = more healthy pot

that I used to get in the 80's. That shit would have you laughing for hours, this stuff gets you on but it's not anywhere near the experience that real Skunk #1 was. Maybe I'm just older and more used to it but this notion of "Super strength" is ridiculous.

111. could this be to reward the liquor lobby?
They have collectively donated more to republicans than the Democrats since 1996:

Even more striking is the differences in campaign contributions from Pharmaceutical Manufacturing where the Dems have never come close to the Republicans in the past 14 years:

138. The end of the T-2000 ....

This is just like the death throws of the T-2000. He's cycling through different modes trying to find something that will work.

Let's see ....

Mexican Amnesty
Tax Cuts
School Vouchers
Weapons of Mass Destruction
More Tax Cuts
French Bashing
Domestic Terrorists
Slavery
Axis of Evil
NEA Bashing
Gay Marriage
Expensive student testing
Mars
Drug company subisdies (by senior citizens)
Flag Burning
Guest Mexican Workers
High THC Marijauna

I think he'll just keep thrashing through these issues trying to hit on ANYTHING that will get his poll numbers back up.

Jeesh, the freepers were never concerned about high nicotine (high contaminant) cigarettes. Why all the attention now?????

142. "Super-strength marijuana" is a lie
I've been smoking for 15 years and have seen no change in quality, either in commercial-grade or high-grade indoor grown weed ("kind bud"). The latter may be becoming more readily available as Canada exports more, but it is no more powerful than it was 10 or 15 years ago.

143. Fortified wine is a bigger problem - cheap, legal, easily available and
guaranteed to get you snockered in less than the time it takes to roll a maryjane joint. People who abuse it can't hold down a job, ruin their livers, destroy their families. So why isn't this a bigger priority than maryjane smoking and gay marriage?

147. I don't do drugs...
...but even I know that Pot is not going to bring about the end of the universe.

Personally, I have found that I cannot breath around the stuff, and since I rather enjoy breathing, I stay away from it. However I realize that when compared to other drugs in this world, pot is about as dangerous as a can of soda.

All it does is cause the user to take on all the character traits of Shaggy and Scooby-Doo. This is common knowledge. If the Bush Administration tries to tell people that pot will bring about the end of civilzation as we know it, everyone will see through it.

It's kind of like crying wolf. If a person is told that pot is very very dangerous, and then finds out that it isn't true, the person might begin to doubt everything he was told about drugs. When that person comes across a drug that really is dangerous, like Meth, of Crack, they won't beleive it's dangerous either, because they were lied to about pot.
