HUGE !!! - Iraq Jail Chief Says Prisoner Abuse Covered Up - Reuters
Edited on Tue Aug-03-04 08:03 PM by WillyT
<snip>

LONDON (Reuters) - The U.S. general formerly in charge of Baghdad's notorious Abu Ghraib prison said on Tuesday abuse of Iraqi captives was hidden from her in a cover-up that may reach all the way to the Pentagon or White House. Speaking on the same day a U.S. soldier at the center of the prisoner abuse scandal is due to face a military court, Brigadier-General Janis Karpinski said she was deliberately kept in the dark about abuse and humiliation of Iraqi prisoners.

"A very reliable witness has made a statement indicating that, not only was I not included in any of the meetings discussing interrogation operations, but specific measures were taken to ensure I would not have access to those facilities, that information or any of the details of interrogation at Abu Ghraib or anywhere else," Karpinski told Britain's BBC radio.

Karpinski, responsible for the military police who ran prisons in Iraq when pictures were taken showing prisoners being abused, has been suspended from her post but not charged with any crime.

She said that those with "full knowledge" of what was going on in Abu Ghraib worked to keep her from discovering the truth. Asked if a cover-up meant involvement of the White House or Pentagon, she said: "I have not seen the statement but the indication is it may have."

Thank You General.

Let's find out the truth, and show it to the world.

Sunlight is the best disinfectant, and we definitely have some cleaning to do.

:grr:

On edit: HUGE !!! (LOL)

2. This is SO NOT HUGE...
Didn't you get the damn memo?

Fraternity Hazing? Blowing off some steam?

Get with the program, now!

The mainstream media isn't going to be covering this story anymore, trust me on that. They got chastised severely for their coverage before (from the freepers and the like), and now the media bigwigs are convinced that talking about this story in any way is 'bush-bashing' and 'unpatriotic', so they'll avoid it like the plague.

If this General's comments appear on ANY 6 o'clock news broadcast, I will sure be shocked. After all, I'm sure she's 'just trying to get herself out of trouble' by trying to blame all this stuff on Saint Bush - which is ridiculous because 'the American People' already know 'The President's Character' and aren't going to 'buy into' the propaganda of the 'bush-haters'...

Welcome to the Country Formerly Known as the United States of America. Please refrain from speaking the truth to power. Otherwise, trust us, you ain't gonna be enjoying your stay here....

we can distribute the news and we are doing that

So stop saying that the battle is over... of if you believe that then go hide

The rest of us will take what we can

3. it will B HUGE
when it is above the fold and is the lead story on all 'news' broadcasts....until then no one will know about it unless they look 4 it.

This is so pathetic....if this was any other administration....... Bill Maher once wondered out loud why the BFEE was treated like royalty by the media. They get a pass on everything!

I kinda wonder how huge it is in the Arab world... or Europe... "they" may be one of our best hopes as far as getting the media to do its job here... I am sure it is getting airtime over there... and not just a little here a little there.

7. Hmm...
Okay... So one of two things can be true:

Thing 1: The torture was well-known and thought to be funny (to the extent that people used the pix as PC desktop wallpaper)

Thing 2: It was all done secretly, and she was kept out of the loop.

So, we have press accounts that seem to contradict each other at some basic level (at least to me.) Or am I missing something?

12. NOe Fascist are in Power
Rumsfailed Admitted violating Geneva Convention

Rumsfailed admitted in public that when CIA Tentet requested that a prisoner be sent to a secret Afghan/US Prison that Rumsfailed did so. After four months a DOD Attorney stated that this was an illegal act so Rumsfailed ordered that this prisoner be sent back to Abu Graib but the prisoner was not listed at that location on purpose. That is two violations of the Geneva Convention. Tenet and Rumsfailed violated the Geneva convention, thereby also The Constitution of the USA. Not one complaint or charge was made regarding Rumsfailed and Tenet, not even by any Dem in Congress. Rumsfaild's admission came after some in Congress called for his resignation and after Rep. Rangel issued Impeachment of Rumsfailed, which nothing has been heard of since then.

Does the US no longer follow the Geneva Convention or the Constitution of the USA?

It appears so.

14. Can't Both Things Be True ???
Just like I don't want this investigation to stop at 'several bad apples', I also don't want it to stop at 'one bad General'. If they did indeed keep her out of the loop, then that needs to be explored.

Take this one all the way to the top.

of insult - they abused her gender. Putting a female in charge, but not really. She fronted for them. Would they have done that to one of them?
