SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) - The wife, two daughters and a son of Gen. Augusto Pinochet were questioned Tuesday by the judge investigating the former dictator's secret bank account in the United States.
Judge Sergio Munoz gave no details on the questioning of Pinochet's wife, Lucia Hiriart, and their daughters Veronica and Jacqueline, and son Augusto.

Radio Cooperativa of Santiago reported that the judge questioned Pinochet's wife because her name appeared in some of the transactions at Riggs Bank in Washington, D.C., and also asked her about some real estate she owns in Chile.

The investigation conducted by Munoz is one of several opened here on the disclosure by a U.S. Senate investigation that Pinochet kept accounts at Riggs Bank with deposits from $4 million to $8 millions.

Pinochet, 88, has been diagnosed with a mild case of dementia among other health problems that have prompted courts to pronounce him unfit to stand trial or dropped charges in a number of lawsuits stemming from the human rights abuses during his brutally oppressive 1973-90 regime.

Pinochet's wife questioned in probe
Tuesday, August 3, 2004 Posted: 8:04 PM EDT (0004 GMT)

Lucia Hiriart, Pinochet's wife, was questioned for three hours.

SANTIAGO, Chile (Reuters) -- The wife of former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet appeared before an investigating judge for questioning on Tuesday about multimillion-dollar offshore accounts the couple held in the 1990s, a lawyer said.

A U.S. Senate report on suspected money-laundering activities at Washington-based Riggs Bank said the couple hid up to $8 million in accounts at Riggs while Pinochet was subject to a court order freezing his assets.

Pinochet family and advisers have said money in the accounts may have come from donations from supporters when he was president and later. Analysts say the wealth does not match his tax declarations, which are public record.

1. Time to question Thatcher on those dodgy UK bank transfers
that took place when Pin was under house arrest in the UK.

Freezing HER assets and subpoenaing HER to give evidence would do everyone a power of good.

2. But they're both living in La La Land
now. What to do with dementia?

3. I sense a coast-to-coast primetime photo opportunity appearance
along the lines of "Ronnie strolling into the sunset of his years" while they wait for enough stem cells to be grown to clone them and bring them to justice in 100 years time....
