Authorities: Possible terror suspects being monitored in NYC area, but no known link to threats

NEW YORK -- Authorities on Wednesday confirmed they are monitoring possible terror suspects in the New York City area but added they have no evidence that any was involved in threats against financial institutions.

Their investigations _ which began well before the recent terrorism alerts _ have focused on individuals who may have links to al-Qaida or the terror groups Ansar al Islam or the Egyptian Islamic Jihad, said Jim Margolin, spokesman for the FBI's New York office. He declined to give more details.

Law enforcement sources said some of the potential suspects have been targeted based on international intelligence linking them to known terror operatives or causes. The FBI-New York Police Department Joint Terrorism Task Force has been using electronic surveillance and other methods to track them, said the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Investigators so far have no evidence that any of the people being watched was involved in casing financial institutions or would be used in an attack, the sources said. A terror warning issued last week said that recently unearthed intelligence pointed to buildings in New York, Washington, D.C., and Newark, N.J., as possible targets.

Seriously I'm getting intuitive feelings that everything is being staged for us -- it's all some kind of lead-up to the convention.

staged events have too high of risks (discovered and their political careers are not just over - but they risk taking the party with them...) The staging is convincing enough of their base that there was a "real threat" - and when nothing happens it is because of how great the bush administration is at keeping us safe. Hence Tom Ridge's words... both on how much MORE scary this intell is than previous intel (before the knowledge that it is old, old intel...) AND his little campaign speech for bush at the end of his speil (something to the effect that the fact that we got this information and can now attempt to thwart it demonstrates the great will and action of this administration.) If I were reading a novel, and were in a literature class... I would call that forshadowing (not of an actual terrorist event... but of how great the bshadmin is in keeping us safe and the evidence of NO attack during the RNConvention as "proof" of how good this admin is on terrorism.

but they have always overplayed and in the past year keep getting caught - with big backfiring - it is that experience (that they are not in as much control as they had been) and that some of the Nixon era admin folks KNOW how much damage is to come down the pike if found out ...

None the less - I still lean towards thinking it is staged - to set up the argument that since this was "the most specific intel _ever_), and "no attack happens" that it will be staged to make W the hero who thwarted (likely unreal) the convention "attack".

I give the "legendary" TCO guarantee that they have NOBODY and have got NOTHING and never did. There might have been some kind of a weird bust in Pakistan on a guy that had downloaded some pictures of NY buildings MAYBE. The press found out about it at the same time as the Feds. The Feds HAD to move on it otherwise the press would have scooped them. This is all bullshit and, as with all the rest of this shit in the past, time will tell.
