Harris regrets terror-plot comments

By WILL LESTER
ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER

WASHINGTON -- Republican Rep. Katherine Harris said Wednesday she regrets making the claim that a plot existed to blow up the power grid in Carmel, Ind., a notion city officials disputed.

But the Florida lawmaker stands by her statement that based on classified information, the United States has thwarted more than 100 potential terrorist attacks.

Harris, who was at the center of the political storm over the disputed 2000 presidential election, made the comments about terrorism and the plot on Monday at a rally for President Bush in Venice, Fla., and a subsequent interview with the Sarasota Herald-Tribune.

She told the audience that while in the Midwest recently, the mayor of Carmel told her how a man of Middle Eastern heritage had been arrested and hundreds of pounds of explosives were found in his home.

4. Why does she regret it if it's true?
Because she was caught in a lie, that's why.

WTF would anyone in Intelligence tell her something about a terrorist plot in a state hundreds of miles away?

7. This is from the article. Is this wrong? I don't know what committees
shes on.

Harris serves on the House Financial Services Committee and the International Relations Committee, which often gets briefed on terrorism. She does not serve on the House Intelligence Committee.

9. Weird thing is...
we are probably better prepared to lose a power grid than one of the BIG BIG cities. We lose power here all the time due to heavy rain or snow. Losing power is sometimes a weekly occurrence here in either the Summer or Winter.

Heck, we lost power here today just because of a thunderstorm. Shit would happen, but not like it would in Chicago or NYC. We're too spaced out.

the great blackout of 2003 (8/17 I think it was) caused by something going wrong over in Ohio. Is it possible that the grid supplies several states, maybe even Chicago, like the Ohio one?

16. I'm not sure about that
Edited on Wed Aug-04-04 07:33 PM by khephra
Although I'm fairly sure that we as a state would deal with an extended power-outage quite well. We are really quite used to it. We have to deal with outages from thunderstorms, tornadoes, floods, and snow all the freaking time.

The rest of the country might be fucked, but I suspect most Midwesterners would probably just shrug and blame the weather, if they weren't listening to the news at the time.

Sometimes it's really great to come from a (mostly)rural state.

14. sounds like Harris was trying to use the Bush terror fear
to give Mitch (I am not a crook) Daniels a boost.

I saw her last night on the 9-11 committee hearings too. Biden gave her a little bit of truth when she tried to act like Bush was not politicizing terrorism.

she makes me want to vomit whenever I see her skanky face.

34. Sorry!! The only shit that happened was into toliets....

when NYC lost complete power last summer almost a year ago.

NYCer's partied!!!

No violence! No crime! No one took advantage of anyone else! A certain sense of community exists in NYC now after 9/11 that didn't exist prior to The Massacre.

Last year's Blackout was nothing, like what happened during the Blackout in the 70's.

Now, if you're foreseeing Shit happening (outside of toilets) when Harris and the rest of the Criminals show up at the end of the month, you may be onto something.

12. Prosecutions are RARE because the member doesn't usually
...disclose the classified information in public and in front of a crowd of people. Finally one of these "leaks" CAN be prosecuted. Oh, wait...she's a repub. Never mind.

Disclosure of classified information is forbidden by law and by the rules of Congress, which require members to take an oath. However, prosecutions or sanctions of members for revealing secret information are rare.

Since she's in so tight with the bush family evil empire/mafia, they may well be talking about this at cocktail parties.... how they're going to cancel elections and declare Marshall Law. Maybe she didn't get the memo that it was supposed to stay 'hush-hush' until the big day comes.

21. WTF "I had no knowledge of the sensitive nature of this situation."
But Harris stood by her comments to the newspaper that the United States has thwarted potential attacks in the last three years, which she said was based on classified information.

"Actually, it's been more than 100," she told the newspaper. "It's classified ... obviously not classified to me ... but things I can't go into details about." She said only the specifics of the thwarted attacks were classified.

And WTF is the story about the Swiftboat Veterans for Truth doing attached to this one, followed by some stinking poll results?

27. how many are from white separatists or supremicist movement people?
when my step dad was in the ATF/secret service in the 1970's thru early 1990's he told me that the most dangerous and violent threats were coming from the far right and that if people knew what they were finding out about the right wing terrorists, the american people would freak out.

i challenge representative harris to tell the american people if those aborted acts of terror came from those evil muslim "swarthy folk" or good ole' white trash 'murkans.

37. Totally bizarre.
Katherine Harris, who- if I'm reading this right- does not have classified clearance, divulged classified information in public, claiming it was passed to her by a city mayor who denies the conversation and also any knowledge of the alleged plot. Not only that, Ms. Harris chose the venue of a campaign rally to make the statement.

Choose one or more:

1. Ms. Harris is delusional and made all of this up.
2. Ms. Harris should be prosecuted for divulging classified information, and if she does not have clearance, whoever passed the information to her should be prosecuted too. And the Bush campaign should reimburse us for the legal costs!

39. Carmel
I have long supported the bulldozing of Carmel, Indiana (I work there), but the frequency of power outages here would make the loss of the power grid hardly noticable. Perhaps Ms. Harris is relying on the vapid nature of the Republican base here to say "Aha! I KNEW there was something going on here! Terrorists! Thats why! We aren't incompetent after all!"
