SA 'mercenaries' being tortured, wife claims
By Noor-Jehan Yoro Badat

It was a sound she couldn't forget, the clanging noise of chains resounding against the stairs of Equatorial Guinea's Black Beach prison as the inmates walked - like echoes from the days slaves walked in chains.

Belinda du Toit had been to visit her husband, Nick, who was one of eight South Africans accused of being involved in an alleged mercenary plot to overthrow Equatorial Guinea's government.

Arriving back in South Africa late on Wednesday night, Du Toit was tired, slightly despondent, but clinging onto a glimmer of hope after seeing her husband.

So what! If the America, the world's leader and Christian moral high ground country can torture people then surely any country can torture anyone they desire.

1. Haven't these mercenaries heard of "letting off steam"....
  • "...it's a brilliant strategy !"
  • "I'm outraged by the outrage"
  • "Nothing that you wouldn't see at a Britney Speares concert"
  • "Frat house hazing"
  • "We were just having a little fun with 'em"
  • "Just a few bad apples"

    2. I am not making excuses for torture
But some of these South African mercenaries have backgrounds that make you think "karma".

    3. I don't think anyone should be tortured....let me be clear about this.
However, I want to further state that when as a nation we torture and/or justify torture, or even consider it we open ourselves and our people to the same kind of treatment.

We put other leaders in via coups that do the same things as in EQ. We look the other way at those who do our bidding, but yell, scream and invade those who don't do our bidding.

I'm sorry, but we can't go around complaining to other countries now that we've opened this nightmare can of worms. We are now left without anything to stand upon except possibly bribes.

It's a sad state of affairs for these wives and I certainly feel for them. I even feel for the men who are being held. Surely, they had some kind of an idea what they were up against when they decided to be mercenaries?

Unfortunately, you can't cry foul when you are doing the same thing as the person you are crying foul against.

    4. theoretically, torture's okay
but to actually harm someone who's at your mercy(?)
they better men then i could ever be (though i'd not hesitate to kill a few torturers if that was possible) ;)
