Tommy Franks tries to take blame for Bush comments on aircraft carrier

By PAULINE JELINEK, Associated Press

Last Updated: August 9, 2004, 01:58:00 PM PDT

WASHINGTON (AP) - Retired Gen. Tommy Franks tried to take the blame Monday for President Bush's much-criticized comments declaring an end to major combat in Iraq more than a year ago.

"That's my fault, that George W. Bush said what he said on the first of May of last year, just because I asked him to," said Franks, former commander of forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.

snip...
"I wanted to get the phase of military operation over as quickly as I could, because a lot of countries on this planet had said as soon as that major stuff is over, we'll come in and help with all of the peacekeeping," Franks said.

"On the first of May when Bush did what he did, I was proud of him because he did what I, as the commander, had asked him to do," Franks said in an appearance at the National Press Club. "So if there's a mistake there, it's mine, not a plot. So I thought I'd share that with you. "

1. Why do people continue to cover for that sorry piece of crap?
He is a spoiled child that has never had to face the consequences of his actions. This is no different. The buck never stops at W's desk, does it?

Kerry needs to resurrect that slogan.

3. Franks probably was "taken to the woodshed"
for his remarks that Kerry would make a good president. So he has to get back on the administration's good side. Chimpy cannot take responsibility for ANYTHING!

6. Bush has a commander
"...he did what I, as the commander, had asked him to do"

We need a new president who doesn't take commands.

13. Yeah, But
with this President, it always seems like failure has a thousand parents...except for the guy who's supposed to be in charge of it all. The CIA, Franks, Tenet, Chalabi, France, Clarke, and countless others I've forgotten by now.

Right, Bush won't get that right either.

Tommy Franks, you're a fucking asshole. You never deserved to lead troops anywhere. What a fucking shit. Just a rotted pig's insides that what you are Tommy Franks. Disgusted. Pure disgust. More than disgust.

What are we all supposed to play stupid?

Posters is there anyway we can cordon Mr. Tommy Franks with the golden dick off into a room with the parents of deceased soldiers?

Why oh why can't we take turns kicking this guy in the ass? There ought to be a law.

14. hey, when you're unelected, you never have to take the blame for anything
you do... no matter how sick or wrong. you see, they figured out that morally they're unaccountable simply by virtue of not really being in office at all.

18. Yeah... right.. it was certainly FRANK'S call to declare that!
Not. It was a purely political move. Franks didn't have the stupid ass banner made. While I believe Franks did feel that it was time to stop the major "stuff" and get to peacekeeping, I really DOUBT he asked Bush to fly in there with that ridiculous costume on... or the banner. I believe Franks WANTED to get on with peacekeeping, but sadly even HE was blindsided by the absolute failure of the whole operation.

24. I saw this while reading news online earlier this evening
and it made me sick.

Oh yeah, I REALLY believe you Gen. Franks. * has been getting called on this ever since it happened. But it takes Franks over a YEAR to tell us the 'truth?' Guess they can start selling us that swamp land. They think they have us so 'dumbed' up we'll believe anything. Well, THEIR party will. Not ours. :dem:

25. thought the bush* advance team
Edited on Tue Aug-10-04 04:07 AM by radfringe
fell on their sword for that one...

or was it the crew of the USS Lincoln...

no -- wait -- wasn't it spun that the mission being accomplished as only being the then current mission of the Lincoln that was accomplished and didn't refer to the "the struggle against ideological extremists who do not believe in free societies and who happen to use terror as a weapon to try to shake the conscience of the free world".

regardless who's idea it was - this was bush*'s big photo op and since he is the pResident -- isn't it also ultimately under his control and responsibility? or is he passing the buck....again...

---didn't know, wasn't aware, don't know the man, not his fault, was misled, fooled again?

26. don't forget it was franks who said it would be necessary...
...to defenestrate the Constitution should the old red, white, and blue get hit with another major attack. And, yet, recently, he came out to defend Kerry against untoward remarks by Republican smearers regarding Kerry's activities in 'Nam. Does Franks want his bread buttered on both sides, or what?
