C-SPAN shelves 'Booknotes'
C-SPAN shelves 'Booknotes'

By Associated Press | August 11, 2004

NEW YORK -- After talking with 800 authors, Brian Lamb will close the book on "Booknotes," his weekly C-SPAN interview series. The final broadcast will be Dec. 5, the network announced yesterday.

Lamb, the series host and C-SPAN chairman, hasn't run out of books. But after 15 years, he's ready to free up the time it takes to prepare for each program.

"When you add it all up, I've committed about 1.8 years of my life to reading books for the series," he said. "It's time to use all those hours in other ways."

One way will be Lamb's new venture, an interview series debuting Dec. 12 in the "Booknotes" time slots -- Sundays at 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. The show, "Q & A," will include guests from politics, science, history, medicine. Occasionally, authors will be included.

1. Too bad. This was one of the best shows on cable.
Someone else should take his place. Maybe Clinton could do it. He is so well read anyway. Think of the questions he would ask of authors. Call him, quick!

2. Good riddance to bad rubbish. Lamb rarely featured pro-Democrat
or anti-Republican books, if ever. He achieved left-right balance by featuring Republican hacks like Ann Coldsore and David Whorowitless and leftist Democrat-bashers like Noam Chomsky and Howard Zinn.

I don't think he ever featured Joe Conason, Gene Lyons, Eric Alterman, David Corn, etc. etc. etc. Cute, huh?

Lamb was now faced with a dilemma of how to avoid criticizing Republicans at a time when most political books out slam Republicans. He solved that dilemma by cancelling the show. How conveeeeeeeenient.

Worthless goddamn two-faced Republican ho.

3. The Cable Networks fund C-Span...maybe they put the screws to Lamb.
It seems C-Span has gone to the dark side on their Washington Journal morning show, so I guess Booknotes had to go given that so many new Democratic books are coming out after years of Repug books.

"Booknotes" was a favorite of mine, but given the rightward turn, I suppose we could do without it. Now if they decide to stop covering hearings and campaign rallies we know that the "lockdown" is complete. The cables had to fund C-Span as a "public service" but Little Powell could probably figure out a way to get rid of C-Span if the Junta is installed for another 4 years.

5. The best interview I ever saw with Michael Moore
Edited on Wed Aug-11-04 12:43 PM by Leilani
was on Booknotes.

It was really terrific, & he is much different than the press portrays him.

Booknotes, because of the Lamb interview technique, which is NOT about him but the author, is terrific.

4. I'll reserve judgement ti;; I see the replacement show.
I usuallt checked to see who he had on booknotes. I found quite a few interesting authors that I had never heard of. Hope the new show will be similar.

6. As long as they still have
...authors on in the middle of the night, discussing their books. Sorry, but some of those people come across MUCH better in print than they do in person. When I have insomnia, I put CSPAN-2 on, and if its one of those authors, they send me off to the land of Nod faster than anyone else can!
