Former Texas governor bashes old foe Bush
The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier

President George W. Bush's jobs record is hurting Iowa and the rest of the country, former Texas Gov. Ann Richards told members of a statewide labor conference here Thursday afternoon.

Richards, campaigning for the Democratic ticket of Sens. John Kerry and John Edwards, painted Bush as a president who is recklessly asleep at the helm of the nation and knocking out thousands of jobs in the process. ..

Richards riddled her speech with criticisms of Bush in the form of jokes. She's widely known for ridiculing then-Vice President George H. W. Bush by saying, "Poor George. He can't help it. He was born with a silver foot in his mouth," at the 1988 Democratic National Convention. Richards was elected Texas governor two years later, but she was defeated by George W. Bush in 1994. ..

"She's from Texas, and she's seen the devastation of (Bush administration) policies," said Grell of Waterloo. "The effect of the tax cuts to the rich are filtering down to the people who can least afford them." ..

3. I knew it was Ann

before I read the thread.

"Annie Get Your Gun"

I love reading and listening to her.

Why does the radical right always use the word "shrill" when referring to women who speak their mind? It's a rhetorical question.

9. They've used lots against Ann, but shrill was never one of them.
Being female, I guess I can say this.

I don't think they use shrill against some women because they are strong willed, or even downright mean. Some women have higher toned voices that get even higher when they get angry. Those are the ones that get the label shrill. When I think about strong willed (or minded) women in politics, I think of Ann Richards, Hillary Clinton, Jane Harmon. They have been called lots of names, and most derogatory, but not shrill that I know of. I think lots of older men are very intimidated by forceful women, and heaven forbid that they are intelligent too.

17. Amen to that. Barbara Jordon was the finest orator I ever heard. I
I lived in her district for a while and was always stirred to the core of my soul when she spoke. O8)

10. Oooh, she was in my home town! I'm so sorry I don't live there now.
I would've figured out a way to see her.

She's "somethin' special".

12. She reminds me of Molly Ivins in many ways.
Texans must be gratefull that Barbara and Molly are with us. Laura the porch sweeper gives the women of Texas a very slack image.

I think that we Texans feel the pain of the Bush Disaster a little more than most folks, because he destroyed us before he went and destroyed the rest of the world.
