Sadr prepared to accept UN troops in Iraq
AFP< SATURDAY, AUGUST 14, 2004 08:42:02 PM >
NAJAF: Shiite rebel leader Moqtada al-Sadr is prepared to accept a UN force in Iraq, a spokesman said on Saturday, as peace talks between the cleric's militia and the Iraqi government broke down in the holy city of Najaf.

"We prefer the UN to the (US-led) occupation forces, because Iraq is a member of the United Nations," Sheikh Ahmed al-Shaibani said.

3. this headline seems to be taken totally out of context.

they make it sound like thats even a realistic option,
while the official merely stated that he'd PREFER UN forces over the coalition forces. (lesser evil?)

I hate this kind of 'wishful thinking, lets report something positive, even if it doesnt make sense' media spin.

5. .easier to kill
UN troops would be a heck of alot easier for Sadr's forces to defeat. That's probably why he'd rather have UN troops there. Honestly there's no evidence Sadr's forces were disrupting the U.S. mission in Iraq so taking Najaf seems to be pretty pointless.

We basically should've given the Shia more control over Southern Iraq but Bush thought it'd score more points for re-election to be tough on Sadr. I'm not a fan of Sadr by any means and feel he's a fanatical scumbag but now he's gone from local thug in Najaf to prominent Shia leader thanks to Bush.

7. Likewise
Bush said in late June just before the psuedo-turnover that he would give 5 or 6 speeches, one a week, to explain his plan for Iraq. He gave that one speech and that is all that we have heard from.

I would like to hear about 'our' mission there too.

8. I remember that. It went the same way as the mission to Mars.
All over the news one day and gone the next.

9. LOL...a speech...
That was more like a miswest twister that lasted 45 seconds, stirred up a lot, but disappeared before it could be tracked....:)

11. I shouldve said "what the mission should be"
The intended mission to create a democratic government in Iraq that doesn't threaten its neighbors and doesn't attempt to acquire weapons of mass destruction. There's no evidence Sadr attempted to disrupt that. Bush just wants to look tough.
