TV Ad Demands Bush Get Allies to Cease Swift Boat Smear Campaign
TV Ad Demands Bush Get Allies to Cease Swift Boat Smear Campaign; MoveOn PAC Ad Rips Attack on Kerry Heroism; Contrasts to Bush Failure to Appear for Duty (U.S. Newswire)

MoveOn PAC today released a new 30-second TV spot attacking George W. Bush for failing to call on one of his major donors -- a long-time associate of Karl Rove and leading Texas Republican funder -- to stop the smear campaign on John Kerry (news - web sites)'s Vietnam service being run by a group called Swift Boat Veterans for Truth.

The ads, which start running in three states and nationally Tuesday, call on the President to personally denounce the ads for their false and misleading attacks on Senator Kerry -- just as Senator John McCain has called on him to do.

Though the White House and the Bush-Cheney campaign deny involvement in the ads, SBVT is a clear Republican Party front. The group is funded primarily by Robert J. Perry, the largest donor to Republican causes in Texas, a long-time donor to George W. Bush, and a supporter of the political work of Karl Rove and Tom DeLay, among others.

"Karl Rove and the Republicans are up to their usual dirty tricks," said MoveOn PAC Director Eli Pariser. "Once again, they're funding and coordinating an outrageous smear campaign while denying their involvement and refusing to condemn it. John McCain knows what it's like to be on the receiving end of these attacks. Tactics like these should have no place in American politics, and, with one call, George W. Bush could stop them." ..

12. FINALLY!!!!
Thank you MoveON. Someone, other than Kerry, has to forcfully take these fools on. The second Kerry starts talking about it, the "liberal" media will be all over him, claiming he elevated the debate on this story and it's now fair game. FINALLY!!!

I think a new group should look into *'s days as a male cheerleader.
Phillips Andover Male Cheerleaders for the Truth??? Are all of his claims as a pom-pom boy the truth... or fabricated??? An investigation is needed!!!

11. Great ad..
.. wish they had time in the ad to point out WHO is specifically paying for that ad. But for those with a short attention span, I think it hits the mark perfectly. Cool, we're fighting back.

22. The whole thing is amusing!
Nobody on the left asked you to run like a goddamn hawk, Kerry. It was you and your foolish neo-liberal crowd that decided you'd try to out-hawk the Bushies--a stupid mistake in the hour of a phony war when the nation desperately needs military deescalation.

The Kerry who renounced the atrocities in Vietnam was the valuable Kerry. The Kerry who shrugs off that past honesty, and now goes around saluting and pretending that there was valor in helping to slay 3 million Vietnamese, is a man who forfeits my concern.

And now I should be outraged by one set of militarists sniping at another set of militarists? LOL! I don't think so!

24. look at the internals on every poll
Kerry outpolls bush on all issues but terror / natl security

that is the sale he must close to get elected. Sorry that is the reality. he has to convince the undecideds that he will keep them safer than Geo Bush.

you can keep the country safe w/o being an idiot hawk.

30. Wouldn't Bush be breaking the law?
Edited on Mon Aug-16-04 03:23 PM by vwrcop
If Bush asked the Swiftvets to stop the add. Wouldn't that be co-ordination with a 527 and therefore illegal?

31. Absolutely not
Candidates condemn third party ads and tactics many times.

Bush is free to state his opinion on the ad.

If Bush broke the law, it was when his campaign put together this group and helped fund them in the first place behind the scenes.
