Iran to hit Dimona if Israel attacks
Edited on Wed Aug-18-04 10:21 AM by bemildred
I first saw this idea here on DU.

Iran will strike the Israeli reactor
at Dimona if Israel attacks the
Islamic republic's nuclear
facilities, a commander of the
elite Revolutionary Guards has
said.

"If Israel fires one
missile at Bushehr atomic power plant, it should permanently
forget about Dimona nuclear centre, where it produces and keeps
its nuclear weapons, and Israel would be responsible for the
terrifying consequence of this move," General Muhammad Baqir
Zolqadr warned on Wednesday.

The general's comments, reported by the Iranian press, mark an
escalation in an exchange of threats between Israel and Iran in
recent weeks, leading to speculation that there may be a repeat of
Israel's strike against Iraqi nuclear facilities at Osirak in 1981.

Iran's attempt to generate nuclear power at its plant being built at
Bushehr is seen by arch-enemies Israel and the United States as a
cover for nuclear weapons development.

Does Iran even have the logistical capability to do an air strike on Israel?

3. Sure
Iran is not Iraq.

Israel and Iran both have missles and planes capable of hitting each other.

4. Here you go
http://www.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/meast/08/11/iran.missile.reut/

Based on the North Korean Nodong-1 and modified with Russian technology, the Shahab-3 is thought to have a range of 810 miles (1,300 km), which would allow it to strike anywhere in Israel.

7. Tit for tat
We don't really know how accurate Iran's rockets are, but we don't really want to find out this way. Insane Bushies would probably like this though, as it would give them the excuse for a nuclear response.

8. Israel
That would cause WW3
Iran launching missiles into Israel, they would fly right over
Iraq, and the US, (Having troops there) would not take that lightly

11. Conversely, any Israeli attack on Iran would go through Iraq
This implicating the U.S. in any action.

9. Am I missing something?
For the past few days, I have only seen posts indicating Iran is making threats based on threats from Israel. I have yet to see any posts stating that Israel is threatening Iran. Any one have any links?

12. These aren't really threats
The U.S. made clear to the Soviet Union that any attack would be met with retaliation. That didn't really constitute a threat - a warning or a caution might be more accurate language. This is an analogous situation. Deterrence theory depends on both sides making their strategies public and maintaining a credible retaliation.

15. Thank you for the response.
Your conclusion actually makes sense. I guess I was confused because Iran is making these 'warnings' over and over for the past week. I just figured, perhaps, Israel had said something. Now I see this is noting more than saber-rattling. I appreciate your insight! :)

Brightest Blessings!

13. google search time = 0.27 seconds
"ISRAEL has warned that it is prepared to take unilateral military action against Iran if the international community fails to stop any development of nuclear weapons at the country’s atomic energy facilities.

As the International Atomic Energy Agency prepares to meet again this week to discuss the situation in Iran, Israel has told Washington it is prepared to act alone and launch a strike similar to its attack on Iraq in 1981 when its air force bombed a nuclear reactor near Baghdad."

http://news.scotsman.com/international.cfm?id=129247200...

That was the last overt warning, from November 2003. But hints have been dropped aplenty...

"This summer, some here warn that Iran may become a nuclear power, perhaps within the next three or four years.

The Jewish state wants the world to act. If diplomacy fails, Israel warns that it knows how to work alone.

"Israel has many, many capabilities," says Danny Yatom, a former head of Mossad, Israel's international intelligence agency.

"And in the past Israel has carried out long-range military operations, like when we bombed the nuclear facility of Iraq . And since then one can imagine that we've improved our capabilities.""

16. Another thank you is in order
I appreciate your 'google' time. I just figured there was something on DU about it (since I haven't donated yet, I don't have a search function).

The second article you provided is very interesting! The comments there show that Israel is discussing options if Iran attacks them! So, I think the other poster is right, both sides are saying "if we are attacked from the other, we will and can defend ourselves." This is saber-rattling.

I appreciate your help!

Brightest Blessings!

17. Those options detailed aren't if Iran attacks Israel
Israel mentioned them in the context of Iran finishing their reactor complex. They are discussing a first strike on Iran to destroy the reactor, as they did in Iraq.

19. statements
Yes, that is true, too! But, the majority of what is being said amounts to "tit-for-tat." I also think that Israel is making the statements about destroying the reactor because there is a feeling that if Iran completed a nuclear program, Israel will be a first target. That is just my opinion though.

Brightest Blessings!

25. very good article!
From your article, it seems that Israel is not the only one making "threats" to take out the reactor. However, Iran has only seen fit to say it will retaliate against Israel. I do believe however, if the US were the ones to make the strike that Israel would still suffer an attack as well as are war-worn troops in the cesspool of Iraq.

22. Terrifying isnt it.
I thought this would be M.A.D and stop israel attacking Iran as they said they would. Then I realised that some nutjobs probably actually want it to happen.

They still want to test their "tactical" nukes probably so that would be their ideal opportunity.
