ABC: Ambulances on Alert (Could Be Used by Terrorists)

The very lights and sirens that urge us to make way when we see and hear an ambulance approaching could be powerful tools in the hands of terrorists intent on using that very promise of help to camouflage a bomb.

Incidents using ambulances to deliver bombs occur with some regularity in the Middle East. Recently, 10 people were killed in one such incident in Iraq.

On Aug. 1, U.S. officials warned that al Qaeda terrorists could be planning attacks on financial institutions in New York City, New Jersey and Washington, D.C.

ABC News has learned that in the wake of that alert, authorities in the Northeast are investigating at least four incidents where people asked suspicious, detailed questions of firefighters and emergency personnel about how ambulances are operated — how fast they go, and when drivers should turn on the siren.

When I lived in the city, I noticed this. One day, I was home from work and it was a school day. The ice cream man pulled up to the house across the street and from my porch (I lived in an upper flat at the time) I could see him with my neighbors, shooting dice on the counter of the truck!

while driving only 10 miles to the farm I saw 4 dump trucks all at different places all pulled over with police cars. I wondered WTF? It seemed odd. Everyone is just going nuts if this kind of thing is happening.

Those innocent looking Remax (and other) balloons flying overhead could be hijacked by terrorists and stuffed with explosives or even anthrax. When gently drifting across the cityscape, the payload could be dropped with devastating consequences.

Just one more thing you could be terrified about. This game is easy to play. Pretty well anything could hypothetically be used by ill intentioned people. It is an existential risk we have lived with forever. It is just that our buttons keep being pushed these days, by people that want to use our fear to manipulate us.

I agree with you. It seems fear is what motivates people. It is sad our society is so afraid, but acts so "macho." If you are prudent, then just live your life! Life is too short to be afraid of everything!

Side note: We should also fear religious nuts (of any kind) trying to take over governments!

Also, I'm quite nervous about birthday party balloons being filled with anthrax and popping at the party.

How about, instead of being frightened by random oxygen molecules, we concentrate on treating people nicer, here and around the world, so that they don't have any reason to hate us? WTF is the point of these warnings? If terrorists are going to steal a bus, truck, ambulance, or goatcart and blow it up somewhere, there just ain't much we can do about it.

Oh I forgot, get a few more rolls of duct tape. If you stretch them across the street, the wonders of duct tape will trap the terrorist ambulances.

But watch out for the terraists in those shopping malls.

in NYC for a long time now, because they are so ubiquitous. Some of them actually have a post where they are to stay until summoned for an emergency in their zone. People don't look twice at them, unless there is a rescue going on.

I'm aware of a situation which occured at a NYC hospital earlier this year, where a repair vendor, angry that he wasn't being paid timely, sent 2 of his guys to 'car-nap' 2 ambulances from the hospital's parking area during the night. He was planning to hold onto them until he got paid, I think. (They had keys to the vehicles.) As soon as they were discovered missing, the hospital called the police, who called the FBI, who basically put out an APB on the vehicles. The repairguy heard a report on the radio, called in that he had them, and was met at the NYC side of the Brooklyn Bridge, where he and his pals were arrested for grand theft auto among other things.

Just like Scuba-queda. It has all been screamed before. Their campaign is clear: FEAR.
