WASHINGTON - A majority of eligible American Muslim voters would vote for Democratic presidential contender John Kerry and independent hopeful Ralph Nader in the November presidential elections, according to a poll released on Tuesday, June 29, by a prominent American Islamic civil rights group.
Fifty four percent of eligible Muslim voters said they would vote for Kerry and 26 percent for Nader, an American of Lebanese descent, while 14 percent remain undecided, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) said.
According to the survey of 1161 individuals taken this month, 34 percent of respondents said the Democratic Party best represents American Muslims' interests, closely followed by the Green Party at 24 percent.
Almost one-quarter (22 percent) of those polled said no party reflected their views

Polls in 2000 showed Muslims favored Bush over Mr. Gore by a wide margin - some showed support in the 90 percent range - and some groups argued that some 60,000 Muslim votes put Bush over the top in Florida.
It's amazing how much can change in four years - years that have included Sept. 11, John Ashcroft, and the Patriot Act. The latest poll by the Council on American-Islamic Relations shows John Kerry with 54 percent of the Muslim vote in the 2004 race, comfortably ahead of Ralph Nader, who garners 26 percent. The president? With a little work he may break out of the single digits with Muslim-American voters.

The New York Times reports that Muslim and Arab Americans have already added hundreds of thousands of dollars to Bush's sizeable campaign war chest. Several Muslim and Arab Americans have reached the Bush campaign's "Ranger" and "Pioneer" donor levels, raising a minimum of $200,000 and $100,000 respectively.
Two of Bush's top financial backers are Florida-based Iranian Americans. Fred Pezeshkan, president and CEO of Kraft Construction Company in Naples (don't miss Pezeshkan's inspiring video presentation) and Morteza (Mori) Hosseini (right), CEO of ICI Homes, a Daytona Beach real estate development company, have each donated $200,000 to the campaign. For Hosseini, this has bought special access to the President, including an invitation to a White House Christmas party and a private meeting with Bush.
Another major Bush backer is Dr. Malik Hasan, former CEO of the nation's 4th largest HMO, Foundation Health Systems. According to the Times, Hasan has donated "several hundred thousand dollars," earning him a personal visit with the President at his Crawford, Texas ranch.
