WASHINGTON -- Dubya loves you. That might well have been the 3-word précis for a 1,200-word e-mail appeal sent out by the Bush campaign in an effort to woo Indian American voters in the upcoming elections. ..

There are nearly two million Indian Americans in the United States, although the number of registered voters among them is hard to ascertain. But with the election in what seems to be a dead heat, every small constituency counts, and both Democrats and Republicans are pitching for the Indian American vote.

Like most immigrants, people of Indian origin are thought to have Democratic leanings although in recent times, Indian Americans who have become wealthy are believed to have turned Republican.

The Republican convention in New York later this month has ten Indian American delegates, including several prominent physicians such as Dr. Zach Zachariah and Dr. R. Vijaynagar, who have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the Bush campaign.

after years spent purging "Indian" from my vocabulary and replacing it with "Native American", "American Indian" seems to be back in vogue. I did sleep three times last year so it's possible I missed the memo.

Since 1776, the US government has entered into about 375 legally binding treaties with various Native American Nations, and the US has violated or broken every last one of them.

That's a fact. Google it if you are interested.

It is also a staggering record of bad faith and broken trust, that has ramifications not just for Native peoples, but for every last citizen who carries the karma. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

Honor the treaties, and you will win Native votes.
