Student Who Challenged Cheney Gets Bail
NEW YORK, Aug 31 (AFP)

A Yale student was released Tuesday on 50,000 dollars' bond on charges he scuffled with Secret Service agents just three meters (10 feet) from Vice President Dick Cheney at the Republican convention here.

Federal charges said Thomas Frampton, 21, was arrested about 9:30 pm Monday after trying to enter a restricted area where Cheney was seated in a private box at the convention in Madison Square Garden and shouted anti-administration slogans. ..

After Frampton's lawyer argued that his client had only wanted to express his political views to Cheney and said that his client had to return to classes at Yale which begin Wednesday, Peck agreed to release him on 50,000 dollars' bond.

Peck also ordered Frampton to stay 100 feet away from Cheney and President George W. Bush. The magistrate scheduled his next court appearance for September 30.

Outside court, defense lawyer Henry Mazurek said his client wanted to "express his views on Iraq and the vice president's position with respect to his connections to the oil industry." Mazurek insisted his client did not intend to harm anyone.

2. If wasn't white and from Yale, they'd send him to Gitmo
They'd call him an "enemy combatant" and "terrorist sleeper" if he was brown skinned, but since he's an all-American white boy from Yale that label would not sell.

Any doubters?

4. you'd have to sign a loyalty oath to get closer
so what good is it for the judge to tell him to stay 100 feet away.

8. Lawyers - please respond!
This ConLaw student (I just graduated from law school) cannot understand how these 'safety zones' are constitutional - in the sense that - the V.P. works for all of us, and we should be able to hear him speak, and have basic contact with him for free - without having to sign a loyalty oath. Unless the student committed assault or battery, then he should not be criminally charged. I heard that he was charged with wrestling around with the secret service agents or something ... but they wrongly grabbed him. I guess I'm not being perfectly logical here, but it really bugs me that Congress passively enacts legislation that pretty well means that an ordinary citizen no longer has the right to hear an official speak - one whose salary he pays for. If we permit 'safety zone' laws, then basically, Cheney et al can only make themselves available at campaign events, and only let persons near them who are rich, full-on supporters. Does not seem like representative democracy to me.

10. "to stay 100 feet away from Cheney and President George W. Bush."??
Did the judge also order Cheney and DimSon to stay within 200' of each other? If they don't, the kid doesn't have a chance of obeying the court's order. (I wonder if they'll let him use 100' strings.)

11. Did Cheney use his foul mouth?
I heard Cheney went berserk screaming at the top of his lungs fuck you...you motherfucking son of a bitch, i'll unscrew your head and shit down your neck..........before being restrained by shocked secret service agents.

All because someone had the guts to question his immoral, illegal war to his face?

So that's "compassionate conservatism" and "restoring honor and dignity to the White House?"

13. Damn, when I first read this...
"trying to enter a restricted area where Cheney was seated in a private box at the convention in Madison Square Garden" I thought it said "sealed ina private box." and I had visions of Dracula laying at rest waiting for nightfall to come terrorize the countryside. :scared:
