'The Passion' sells 2.4 million DVDs by midday

ANTHONY BREZNICAN, AP Entertainment Writer

(08-31) 17:26 PDT LOS ANGELES (AP) --

The DVD of Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ" went on sale Tuesday and sold 2.4 million copies by midday.

"Just like there's no comparison for the film, there's no comparison for this performance," said Steve Feldstein, spokesman for Fox Home Entertainment, which is distributing the DVD.

Total one-day sales figures for the movie were expected Wednesday.

"We think a lot of the consumers will be going in after work to pick it up," Feldstein said. "So the real question with this movie is: how high is up?"

Just like in the theatrical marketing, churches and religious groups became active in trying to promote the DVD to their congregations, sometimes buying huge blocks of the film for sale to parishioners. Many were paid for well in advance and picked up Tuesday.

2. Thank goodness I didn't work today
I would have had to put up with a lot of bitchy freepers who couldn't get a copy.

The store I work at has a vendor that had 10000 copies on standby and able to be airshipped within a 4 hour notice.

Fucking crazy.

4. All Due Respect to Mel Gibson
It's amazing what an artist can accomplish when they don't rely on stockholder-financed studios to get their product made.

That said, I'm still not watching it.

5. I went into a video store on the way home from work tonight ...
... and they were playing this on the in-store video system. I asked the clerk about it, he said he was told by his manager to play it. He said the film bothered him, so he just didn't look up from the counter. Finally, he had had enough and took it out.

7. The manager of Engles (grocery) at Traveler's Rest, SC was on his ladder

When I turned in for a quick purchase on my 50 mile trip from Greenville to my mountain house this morning. The marquee said "Boston Butts $2.99/lb with card" when I turned in. When I left 10 minutes later it said (in bigger letters), THE PASSION OF CHRIST ON SALE HERE. I wonder if Boston Butts went up to $3.99 a pound. Jesus Christ! If so, I should have bought a couple at $2.99 per. SHIT!

I also wondered if the marquee message meant the movie or the theological concept. The "Passion of Christ" is on aisle four with the Wesson oil, olive oil, and anointing oil. There will be I/D checks to access aisle 4. Only the true-believers allowed.

Hey! It's coming. It's South Carolina. It's BoJo country! Land of thousands of small churches with thousands of corny marquee messages ... every week.
