Petroleos Venezuela may reopen mothballed ...
Edited on Tue Aug-31-04 09:53 PM by bemildred
refinery in Bahamas

Sort of a marker, Venezuela is doing lots of hydrocarbon deals
with Latin American countries, in the Carribean, with Mexico and
Colombia, with Brazil and Argentina. Colombia in particular seems
to have gone from the verge of war to best buddies in a month or so.

Aug. 30 (Bloomberg) -- Petroleos de Venezuela
SA, the state oil company, may reactivate its
mothballed refinery in The Bahamas, taking
advantage of strong demand for refined products,
a minister from the island country said.

Petroleos de Venezuela is interested in either
reopening the refinery, located on Grand Bahama
Island, or dismantling part of it and erecting a
smaller facility in its place, Bahamas Trade and
Industry Minister Leslie Miller said in an
interview Friday after an energy conference in
Montego Bay, Jamaica.

At least $100 million needs to be invested in the
refinery to restart it, said Miller, who will meet
later this week with Venezuelan officials in
Caracas.

2. It is more than that.

We are watching the precipitate collapse of US hegemony, the end
of the Monroe Doctrine. The complete failure of the US and its
minions to deal with or stop Chavez in Venezuela, the rise of Lula,
Kirschner, the rebellion in Bolivia, the coming trial of Pinochet,
it all goes together. The example of Chavez will be emulated by
politicians elsewhere in Latin America who aspire to be more than
well-paid US stooges. We are going to have to compete on the open
market for that oil, those metals, and a large portion of the proceeds
will be kept rather than being donated to the multi-nationals. Mere
specks of Carribean island are telling the mighty US to fuck off.

4. Nestor Kirchner is THE most underrated head of state today.
He's doing wonders for Argentina. All by disobeying the money lords' orders. He rocks.

5. You're right. How unusual is it for a man who was held in prison
and tortured during a right-wing "dirty war" to eventually become the President of a country, finally, after all that time?

Really great man. Argentinians should really be proud of him. Some of us DU'ers have read that Bush has been bullying him, trying to chose his nation's friends for him, leaning on him to renouce Hugo Chavez. Don't think he's going to take kindly to Bush's bullying after working so hard all his life for his FREEDOM, and that of his country's.
