LAT: No Joke, Twins' Act Needs Work
The Bush daughters, fresh from their booing this week at the MTV Video Music Awards in Miami, came onstage at the Republican National Convention on Tuesday night and introduced a new strategy in the war on terrorism: giggling.

They were there to introduce their father, President Bush, who appeared via satellite from Pennsylvania, where he stood in front of a softball game and introduced First Lady Laura Bush.

But there were hiccups along the way to the first lady's entrance, courtesy of her 22-year-old twin daughters, who carry themselves with an implied raunch.

(snip)

The Republicans, you were reminded, are really good at chest-thumping and flag-hugging, but they ought to stay away from showcasing their privileged, Prada-wearing first daughters until the campaign is over. After the speeches were over, even CNN's talking heads seemed to be struggling to make sense of the sisters' sister act. Judy Woodruff stammered, "I'm not sure what that was about" while an incensed Jeff Greenfield called the appearance a "frankly discordant moment."

2. Ha Ha Ha glad to see that the girls were as annoying as I had hoped they'd
be.

We can win this election if we can get across how uncool the repubslicans are.

They fucking suck, in everyway, from their "stars" to their policy. They are the definition of square and hollow and people want more.

Glad to hear the Bush twins were such a joke.

10. The New York Post: JEN & BARB: MORE GAFFES THAN LAUGHS
September 1, 2004 -- The Bush twins made their national television debut last night — with a string of weak one-liners that drew cringes from the crowd and at one point brought a soft rebuke from their grandparents.

The twins, Barbara and Jenna Bush, had the job of introducing President Bush, who in turn introduced First Lady Laura Bush. For much of their brief time on stage, the twins seemed to amuse themselves more than the crowd.

Some delegates in Madison Square Garden seemed startled when Jenna Bush accused her beloved grandmother Barbara of being too opinionated, hating their clothes and being out of touch with pop culture. "She thinks, 'Sex and the City' is something married people do, but never talk about," Jenna said.

President George H. W. Bush smiled and wagged his finger at his granddaughter, as if to say "shame."

. . .

They also referenced a speech given at the Democratic convention by the daughters of their father's opponent, John Kerry, by saying they, too, had a hamster. But unlike in the Kerry household, where the presidential candidate jumped into the water to save the family pet, "let's just say ours didn't make it," Barbara Bush said.

"They told slightly off-color jokes, apparently to drive home the point that, supporting a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage aside, their parents weren't totally freaked out about S-E-X. Her grandmother, Jenna said, "thinks 'Sex in the City' is something married people do but never talk about," getting the show's name wrong. Barbara said, "Jenna and I are really not very political." She's the one who graduated from Yale."

It was like a bad, bad sorority skit. Then it was followed by the Bush video on a baseball field, in which he also threw out a couple of lame one-liners which I swear had a laugh track.

I wasn't sure whether I'd accidentally tuned into the convention or a cheesy variety show from the '70s. In any case, I found myself waxing very nostalgic over Sonny & Cher and Flip Wilson.

Some say we should not pick on the twins.I strongly disagree.
Their family made a decision to put them out in the public eye.
As far as I know they are "paid" for being on the campaign trail.

If their family is so damn smart, why didn't they have more sense than to put them out to the American people. That was a cruel thing to do. Their parents should have said, "NO." But it is a clear example that it is not a functional family.

If GW Bush, Poppy and Babs and Laura the Librarian are not strong enough to reign in these two, they are not strong enough to run this country.

They need to be sent to a SPA BAR until after the election. They would be happy there. They have too much air in their heads for my taste.

They are also an insult to the millions of fine young adults in this country!

Bring on the families with REAL values... Kerry/Edwards 04

JENNA: When you grow up as the daughters of George and Laura Bush, you develop a special appreciation for how blessed we are to live in this great country.

We are so proud to be here tonight to introduce someone who read us bedtime stories, picked up car pool, made us our favorite peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and cheered for us when we scored a goal, even when it was for the wrong team.

38. You're all being blinded by partisan blindness,
If you think these girls didn't perfectly epitomize dumbed-down middle-American watchers of reality tv. That was the point. They may be the daughters of privilege but they personify the common experience. Bush may cater to the "have mores" of his "base", but his appeal is to the common idiot in a SUV with an American flag pasted on it, carting the kids to the game.

And it's teen rebellion, Republican style. They buy things Dad and Grandma don't like. They watch and do the same stupid crap as everyone else. They aren't all fancy like the Kerry daughters, a-goin to France and makin' those snooty in-dee-pendent films. Nope they are just regular old All American fun lovin kids like your kids who get all excited over spotting Ryan Seacrest. Rove knew what he was doing when they put them up there. The Bushes aren't going to look like a stuffy out of touch New England blue blood family like they did in '92. This is about appealing to that undecided soccer mom in the suburbs who has "two just like 'em at home." They don't care if they offend the freepers on prime time. They'll give them plenty of red meat later.

90. This is an encouraging sign...
I hope that those young people were seeing through the vapid sideshow of the twins, rather than simply being disrespectful as they might to anyone.

43. Was this the female version of Dumb and Dumber?
I'm reminded of a word my mother often used - insipid. Sorry, but you can't buy class.

44. They couldn't even get the name of the TV show right
They clearly called it "Sex In The City". The show's name actually was "Sex And The City".

The contrast with Kerry's daughters was astounding. Hell, Edwards' little kids acted more mature at the DNC than Bush's adult daughters did last night.

Were the Bush twins drunk perhaps?

47. I was thinking about this last night
Democratic children:

The Kennedys (class)
Amy Carter (class)
Chelsea Clinton (class)
The sisters Kerry and brothers Heinz (class)

What, do republicans not know how to raise their children? I thought they were all about family values.

51. I have to say that I liked it for the same reason Judy Woodruff didn't
It looked like a pretty unscripted fiasco to me:

- criticizing their grandmother in front of all these "family value" hypocrites

- reminding everybody what daddy did (or didn't do) after college

"Besides, since we've graduated from college, we're looking around for something to do for the next few years.

Kind of like dad."

"You know all those times when you're growing up and your parents embarrass you? Well, this is payback time on live TV."

Indeed.

If think this was probably the closest the Republican convention will ever get to the truth.

81. And they condemn Affirmative Action?!

Yale should hang its head in shame.
There is no way this child should have EVER graduated. There is a minority child that is brilliant that did not get in because of Barb Bush and her dumb dad.

Once again, Bush family members are the Poster Children for Affirmative Action.

63. They were hilariously awful.
The apple doesn't fall far from the tree. But I had a glimmer of a suspicion that maybe they did it on purpose. Rumor has it that they didn't want Daddy to run for president in the first place, and (assuming they are smart enough to plot such a thing, which might be a stretch), maybe they deliberately decided to act like Paris Hilton after three martinis in order to make Daddy look bad. Not likely, but just a thought.

purpose acted that way, because

they are incapable of acting any other way...

Whomever began the idea of inheritance taxes had people like this in mind when they sought to end the passing along of power to the next generation...

70. I see they've been

reined in. Just now at a RNC Youth Rally, they read from a prepared script mentioning all the 'virtues' of republican family lore. Nothing spontaneous whatsoever...no deviation...enough slightly silly lines to make them look 'natural' to the casual viewer. UGH.

83. The Kerry girls appeared live and got booed
Then they introduced the Bush Twins, who were on videotape. When the videotape was played, the audience sound was turned down, so the boos the twins received (equal to the Kerrys') were not as apparent as the boos the Kerry girls received.

91. I wouldn't doubt it. A few well-placed booers and an open mic...
Edited on Wed Sep-01-04 07:56 PM by jdolsen
...remember Mike Moore's little tidbit at the Oscars. The way it looked and sounded was that there were people booing Mike Moore. In actuality there was a well-placed open microphone (backstage) next to six or seven well placed teamster-types, who started booing Michael Moore. They were actually in place waiting for him to start speaking. The crowd starting booing the booers, but to you and I at home it sounded like Moore got booed. Did not happen. At least not by the audience. I had a conversation with someone that was there. The audience was VERY supportive of MM and what he had to say. That's why he kept challenging the media to fairly and truly report the incident, which of course did not happen.
