Bush daughters make awkward stab at stand-up comedy
NEW YORK (AFP) - President George W. Bush (news - web sites)'s twin daughters drew as many nervous twitters as laughs with an awkward stab at stand-up comedy before the Republican convention nominating their father for re-election.

Jenna and Barbara Bush raised eyebrows with lines such as a jab at their grandmother, former first lady Barbara Bush, for thinking the television series "Sex in the City" was "something married people do, but never talk about."

The 23-year-old college graduates were relentlessly irreverent as they took the podium on the second night of the convention after Hollywood-hunk-turned-California-Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger (news - web sites), whose wife is a Democrat.

"Isn't he awesome?" gushed Jenna. "Thanks to him, if one of us ever decides to marry a Democrat, nobody can complain."

Some of the jokes in their prime-time appearance ahead of mother Laura Bush drew laughs, but others fell flat. Television cameras caught Vice President Dick Cheney (news - web sites) stoney-faced.

1. I thought they weren't going to make a speech.
Isn't that what they were saying last week? Weren't the pundits all gloating about how the Bushes were above having their daughters speak at the convention, unlike those awful Kerry people.

2. This is why I think they did their own agenda
and didn't follow the script. Can you imagine Karen Hughes rehearsing them for all of those remarks? I don't think so.

6. They were reading from a prompter.
Or, at least one was running with words on it. They appeared to be reading, didn't they?

4. What went wrong:
1. Author, author! The material sucked. It wasn't funny or amusing.

2. Delivery. The girls aren't comedians. They aren't funny. They didn't rehearse enough. I don't think THEY thought the material was funny too.

3. The audience. RNC, not family dinner table. Hey twins, you aren't cute and funny in front of everybody, even a friendly crowd.

7. They never learned the first rule of comedy
that you shouldn't laugh at your own jokes.

Between the twins and the awful music, the Bu$hbots all looked like they were having a really sucky time.

Compared to the Dem Convention, it's a no brainer whose party I would want to go to.

8. Their hamster died too.
Everything they touch pales in comparison to the Kerry/Heinz families.

Effing Shrub can't even revive a hamster, much less the US economy!

17. after the DNC, I mentally challenged Yeehaw to "top that!"
he failed. I also thought that if Bush'd been in the same situation with Licorice sinking into a lake, he'd apologize half-heartedly...

10. Oh, I don't think you could call that a speech
You could call it a lot of things (horrid stand-up comedy routine fits pretty well, IMO), but NOT a "speech."
