Canada's new marijuana law will hurt U.S. problem: official
Detroit — The United States is being inundated with potent marijuana from Canada, and the problem would be exacerbated if Ottawa decriminalized the drug, the U.S. drug czar said Friday.

<snip>

John P. Walters, director of the U.S. Office of National Drug Control Policy, said some Canadian drug traffickers have used selective breeding to grow marijuana that has up to 30 per cent content of THC, the psychoactive chemical found in marijuana. In comparison, he said, much of the marijuana used in the 1970s had less than one per cent content of THC.

High-potency marijuana is more likely to cause addiction and health problems, officials have said.

"The kind of marijuana coming from Canada is essentially the crack of marijuana," Mr. Walters said in a news conference at a Detroit drug treatment centre. "It is dangerous. It is destructive."

25. ReThugs Want us on Heroin and Coke
You must have noticed what a resurgence those have had since they took over,
while they've been going all-out against pot, even busting cancer patients
who use it medicinally with the blessing of state and local authorities.

2. Canadian marijuana is the "crack of marijuana"?
Golly, do you think this nimrod just might be trying to create a little guilt by association with the crack and marijuana reference?

But just in case he's right, are there any Canadian DU'ers who can hook me up? I thought I had it pretty good in Northern California, but I don't want to miss out on the oxycontinangeldustblacktarheroin of marijuana.

4. Somebody please tell Mr Walters...
...that if he smoked more pot and less crack, he might be less paranoid.

Seriously, what about NY and OH, which have had decriminalised pot for AGES?! Where's all the kerfuffle about NY and OH causing "marijuana crack" across state lines (easier than across the border)?!

The US just doesn't want us to do this, which just tells me it's a good idea. Full speed ahead, guys! I think I'm going to write to Mr. Chretien again urging him to take this guy's advice as being worth the toilet paper it should be printed on.

6. Raygun Admin used these same bullshit numbers
Edited on Fri Aug-22-03 10:43 PM by comsymp
30%, my ass~ if my brain cells were in better shape i'd be able to access the link quickly but they used this same figure in the '80s...

there is NO SUCH THING as commercial-grade marijuana w/a 30% thc content:

http://www.drugwardistortions.org/distortion11.htm
Even the Drug Enforcement Administration concedes ( "Drug Intelligence Brief: The Cannabis Situation in the United States, December 1999") that "According to University of Mississippi analyses, the THC content of commercial-grade marijuana has risen slowly over the years from an average of 3.71 percent in 1985 to an average of 5.57 percent in 1998.
More recently, the US National Drug Intelligence Center's "National Drug Threat Assessment 2002 " report, released December 2001, stated that "Overall, potency, as characterized by THC content, is still increasing. According to data from the Potency Monitoring Project, the THC content of commercial-grade marijuana increased from 1997 to 2000 for commercial-grade (4.25% to 4.92%) and for sinsemilla (11.62% to 13.20%)."

any stoners know where to find the raygun link?

I'm no fan of Clinton's drug policies but don't really remember his specific actions re: CA... pls elaborate? The most egregious Fed actions against MM in my recent memory were when Crazy Asa started busting the Compassion Clubs.

7. MORE THC is a GOOD thing you idiot!!!!!!!
In the 70's, you would have had to light up a couple of joints to get you hummin. Thats a lot of physical smoke you'd have to inhale no matter what chemicals are in the smoke.

Now it just takes a couple of hits and up you go. it takes a lot less physical smoke to deliver the same amount of chemicals into your system.

The 'buds today are much more powerful than 30 years ago' argument is a bunch of crap.

23. Here's some secret info
Waaaay back in the golden age (early 70s) the main university in the Vancouver area (UBC) researched the idea of marijuania to help chemotherapy patients. So, with fed $$, they proceeded to engineer the best pot they could. This is now the holy grail of marijuania in BC: UBC chemo. Most pot nowadays is either a hybrid of that or of Dutch buds.('Course this all could be an urban myth...)

What is not a myth are all the stories of people used to other types getting paralysed by BC bud. And anyone can grow it. There are towns that rely on it in BC and, in fact, it props up the BC economy in a HUUUGE way.

15. Stoned?
What sort of stash do you currently have? Do you have a bag of the Crack of Marijuana, or are you stuck with the Mad Dog 20/20 of Marijuana?

Me, I have a little of the carbernet sauvingon of marijuana left, which certainly beats the hell out of the Nyquil of Marijuana or, god forbid, the Freon Inhalant of Marijuana.

21. LOL! That's what i was going to say!
Now all the enterprising young dealer has to do is put some labels on his baggies (it still comes in baggies - right?) that says "100% pure Canadian Crack Weed". Suddenly his stock of plain ole "sinse" is worth 5 times as much!

22. Our smoke vs Your smoke
seems the smoke we send south is not responsible for acid rain and various other breathing disorders that many canadians suffer from fossil burning generators in the North eastern United States.

You should have been in our senate last spring when Waters tried to tie our local growers to bin laden. He was laughed out of the building. Canadians are a polite and humble people, but we also enjoy Monty Python and Paul Waters would fir right in with Clease and Idle any day of the week.
