Shadegg attacks Moore, calls Kerry supporters mentally ill

ASSOCIATED PRESS

NEW YORK - Arizona Rep. John Shadegg got a standing ovation from his delegation Wednesday when he announced that, partly because of their complaints, USA Today had withdrawn convention credentials for film maker Michael Moore.

Shadegg had instructed delegates to call USA Today to protest the paper's decision to hire Moore for the week. When a top executive called him to ask why he was mad at the paper, Shadegg said he responded: "You're just nuts if you think we're going to buy your paper, when you credentialed kind of the anti-Christ."

As delegates rose to their feet, Shadegg said he got a return call a few hours later saying Moore's credentials had been revoked.

Shadegg referred to "Fahrenheit 911" as a "crockumentary."

He also said Kerry voters "have mental health problems," adding: "I'll probably get in trouble for that."

1. "mental health problems"
What an asshole!

Yeah, I assume he'll get in trouble for it but he'll probably just laugh it off. I may just call his office tomorrow although I don't live in AZ. I urge - strongly urge - all Arizona people to call and keep calling this idiot's office.

16. Yes. And the Bushevik Paln will be similar, I think
We will have to wait until "1943", when the Busheviks have totally steamrolled our Democratic-Republic into Imperial obesiance.

Only THEN will we find out what they have in store for us.

That is something I desperately hope will never come to pass.

62. Wasn't there a recent SCIENTIFIC Study
that found correlations between higher IQ and registering Democratic and voting for Gore, and another that found significant relationship between voting Republican and psychiatric disorders?

Of course, that's why the GOP is so down on science.

119. Well
one of the groups strongly behind the moral idiot is the conservative Xtians, and they're bound and determined to take evolution out of the schools and have creationism taught. So yeah, science for that portion of the equation is something to be feared.

My best friend is a born-again, and while I love her dearly, the religious stuff gets on my nerves. I've learned a lot though, by listening to her. They hate homosexuals because they said that the bible says something about Christ saying not to lay down with a man as one would do with a woman. They believe the world was created 4400 years ago. And they believe that killing, waging war and all kinds of nasty stuff is okay as long as it's done with the name of JC on their lips. And many of them believe strongly in the new culture war crap by people like Tim LeHaye, where god is going to scoop up the believers and carry them off to heaven and leave the rest of us non-believers and sinners here on earth. I try to argue that the bible is all anectdotal, and no more proven than the ancient Greek and Roman (and other) mythologies, and in fact, some of the Xtian stories directly parallel those myths, but they close their ears off, and don't listen. My friend is a highly intelligent woman who simply finds something comforting in her reading of the bible, and seems to find a peace that she was lacking in her life through her church group. I need comfort, too, but I would rather believe in the austerity of real life than a mythology that I find highly dubious and suspect.

As far as this guy is concerned, it's people like him, Rush, Coulter, and other hatemongers of the right that keep the schizm alive and well. I have a couple of friends in Arizona--I'll pass this on.

123. And if she's saying that Jesus condemned homosexuality
(or abortion, for that matter), she doesn't know her Bible as well as she thinks she does.

She may be interested to know that Tim LaHaye has been involved with the Moonies since the early 1980s. Google "Tim LaHaye" and "Unification Church" to learn more.

I just don't understand such churlish behavior exhibited by these public servants. We should call it 'doing a Zell'.

I did just web over to his site and left a message (not expecting that he himself will see it)indicating that he was proof that people without brains and without manners could be elected. I also said that I hoped he'd fall into the crock(umentary) and its enlightenment. Finally, I entered full personal information so he know I'm not taking potshots from hiding.

I did email his office. But it's like whupping a dead jackass in the harness. Flatline learning curve.

I'm also not waiting for him to learn. I'm out helping the local office - three of my family are, in fact, every week.

Being active in the actual campaigns is even more important than being counted on voting day.

We have to use the 'fire in the belly' to avoid another 2000; we have to WORK.

If we're just typing and jawing and bitching while sitting on our fat butts we ARE going to have our butts kicked some good by the RNC.

SO please DO something, don't just sit here.

Thanks.

24. Dear Jagoff
Here is what I sent....in a hurry cause I am leavin work but I hope it gets the point across....

-------------------
Your statement that Kerry voters have mental health problems is wrong for a number of reasons. Your statements make an issue with millions of Americans a trivial matter. Mental health issues are not a joking matter. You are an elected official. You are supposed to represent your constituents. Do you HONESTLY think that the majority of your constituents think that your comments regarding Kerry supporters is funny? I have got a little clue for you....you got laughs at the convention because they are a captive audience. You make me VERY happy that I do not live in Arizona. If people like you represent the population, your state is in dire straits. Here's to you never being elected again!

40. YES. Email him. And HERE is the reason why, from the story itself:
Note this passage:

"Shadegg had instructed delegates to call USA Today to protest the paper's decision to hire Moore for the week."

I think I once mentioned (well, knowing me, probably several times) that these assholes have their ditto-head machinery stoked up to carry out whatever directives might come in. They're foaming-at-the-mouth fervent, and willing to go all out on campaigns like these. They KNOW, clearly, what a squeaky wheel can do. They've just proven it again, if this is true. Here is EVIDENCE of the harassment the media gets when it tries to give OUR side an equal shake. And this is JUST ONE account. I have heard, over and over and over and over - statements by people in the media, from Dan Rather onward, that they are SERIOUSLY harassed and stormed with hate mail and threats and other lovely stuff, when they do anything BUT fawn over the bushies. They are a VERY small, driven group. But they're LOUD AS HELL. So they take on the highly inaccurate luster of being a large and powerful group. Besides, if those lovelies are ALL the media ever hears from, what else do you expect them to assume about their viewership/listenership/readership? THAT'S why they bow to these people again and again and again.

WE HAVE TO SPEAK UP!! We HAVE to be as loud as these people are!!! Maybe not as noxious, but just as LOUD, if not LOUDER.

Study of Bush's psyche touches a nerve

Julian Borger in Washington
Wednesday August 13, 2003
The Guardian

A study funded by the US government has concluded that conservatism can be explained psychologically as a set of neuroses rooted in "fear and aggression, dogmatism and the intolerance of ambiguity".

Let's see what this ass hole thinks when he finds out its the BUSH supporters with nneuroses, not the other way around

I can't vote for you, but hear me when I say: This is America, and differences of opinion are still allowed in this country. If you don't like what Michael Moore says, that's fine. You don't have to read it. But to try to silence his voice is UnAmerican. And I think, in a moment of self-evaluation (if you have any) you recognize this.

120. John Shadegg is from an "old"
Phoenix family. His father, Steve, was Barry Goldwater's campaign manager.

John is a life long, close friend of a guy I work with.

I surprised my co-worker on Friday with a present for Labor Day, Lou Dobb's "Exporting America: Why Corporate Greed Is Shipping American Jobs overseas."

I told him, "Steve, seriously you have simply got to open your eyes and ears if you care about the kind of future your daughter will have. And I know he does, that kid is everything to him.

I have posted the CBO graph that vivdly shows the reckless debt and deficit plunge we have been made to take under Bush* policies right over my desk. I frequently point to the graph and ask him, "Who is going to have to pay for this, Steve?" If you won't answer, I will, "It's your daughter who's going to have to pay."

And I express my disgust with his buddy Shadegg who was, until recently, a big balanced budget deficit hawk. I ask him, "What the hell happened to Shadegg that he so easily betrayed what were once his staunchest principles. Is he afraid some Hollywood actor might call him a 'girlie-man?'"

He seemed really interested in the Dobbs book and I think he will actually read it. We'll see.

I doubt it.

USA today only has Michael for 4 columns. 2 are already done.

Do you really think they're cut him off over reader complaints after the mess they went through with Coulter?

They were stringing Shadegg along or he was lying, I'll bet.

I checked the USA Today site--nothing about Michael not coming back tomorrow. Checked Google news, nothing.

If I ever have to bet, I always bet that the Republican is lying. I have yet to lose.

What sort of person are you?
Oh, a republican, 'nuff said
So, lets talk about the issues, but wait, Kerry supporters are lunatics.
I really wish I lived in your state so I could cast a vote against you.
So much for raising the tone of the political debate.

Hoping you lose in the next election,

Is this guy a lock?

26. We aren't even running anybody against him!
Yeah, he's a lock. Arizona has this really peculiar way of ceding districts to the Repugs. We don't even try to win in area that have less than a 50-50 splity. Shadegg's District and my own is 60-40 repub advantage. We are 50-50 when idependents are factored in.But we are poofed by the Dems with the reasoning that we "Can't" win. I feel you certainly won't win if you don't have a candidate running. But no one cares what I think. We apparently can only concentrate on targeted races. Terry McCauliffe personally told me that that is all the DNC and the DCCC will do. It makes me sick.
And we have practically no one running for any office in many disticts at all.Again, they wouldn't win.Blah1 Blah! Blah!. My primary ballot is almost blank except for County Attorney and Corporation Commission and we don't have all the candidates for that!

124. Tell your local Dems to wise up
How are voters supposed to become Dem if they never hear the Dem side from candidates?

I've told this story before, but in 1998, there was an affluent suburban Portland, Oregon state legislative district that the Dems never bothered to challenge. It was represented by a smarmy fundamentalist loon, and some of the people I knew who lived there said they didn't vote because they couldn't stand to mark their ballots for him.

It just so happened that in 1998, a Socialist from the district decided "what the hell" and ran a low-budget campaign. To everyone's surprise, he got 20% of the vote. One of my acquaintances, an old-money type but an atheist, said that he voted for the Socialist just to send a message against smarmy fundamentalist loonies.

Coincidentally, that was the year that David Wu (D) won the Congressional seat--by 300 votes over a Republicanite Barbie doll who had once been a staffer for Newt Gingrich.

I'm convinced that the presence of this Socialist candidate brought out the local liberals and helped put David Wu over the top.

In 2000, the Dems put up a candidate in that suburban legislative district, and he lost narrowly--about 2-3% as I recall.

The same candidate ran again in 2002, and as I watched the tide of depressing national news on the monitors at the Portland Dems' election night gathering, there were a couple of pieces of local good news. One was that the smarmy fundamentalist loon had been knocked out of his district by the same candidate he narrowly defeated in 2002.

In other words, the district went from safe Republicanite to narrowly Dem in six years.

What the Dems need in all these "safe" Republicanite districts is candidates who are willing to be sacrificial lambs, to mount low-budget campaigns knowing that they'll probably lose and not caring.

I can't ask you to do this, saracat, but perhaps there is another Dem as disgusted as yourself who is willing to do this. Or perhaps the local Greens or Socialists are willing to run a candidate to bring the left-of-center types out of hiding.

I have taken great offense to your offensive and baseless comments regarding the mental state of Kerry supporters. May i remind you sir that you are paid by the government, the goverment that is funded by the taxpayers including Kerry supporters. You Sir need to issue and apology to Senator Kerry and all of his supporters. You would do well to keep in mind that you represent the people of Arizona and right now your comments reflect poorly on those who have supported you. I will be fowarding this to the Kerry campaign as well and Senator McCain.

19. email: mentally ill soldiers should come home
I am concerned about the mentally ill soldiers from Arizona that we have in our armed forces. There are some soldiers that think president Bush mislead the country into war and sent them overseas without planning for their deployment in terms of body armor and troop numbers. Some of these soldiers are effeminant as stated by the California governor because they are worried about how their families will get along because the reserves don't pay as well as the jobs they were called away from. I believe mentally ill soldiers and reservists, such as those you mentioned who support John Kerry should be allowed to come home. Please don't force these mentally ill soldiers into harms way - send our president instead.

29. GOP's Greatest Hits, so far this week:
Edited on Wed Sep-01-04 06:20 PM by Caliphoto
Karl Rove's mentor passed out vile carictures of Purple Heart Medals to delegates. Newt Gingrich called it, "funny". Veterans across America are pissed.

The GOP's own Swift Boat Liars are refusing to remove names of fellow Swift Boat Vets who DID NOT agree to their smear campaign against John Kerry. The media, who was to have a cameo role in this episode, did not appear.

Karl Rove said today that Kerry "tarnished the service of veterans".

Karl Rove, in a repeat performance, equated the people of Northern Ireland to the terrorist group, Al Qaida.

Bush insulted Iowans today, by refering to Iowa as "the hinterlands".

Rudy Giuliani, best known for his role in comandeering the 100 Million dollar fund for 9/11 victims for his own personal foundation, invoked 9/11 dozens of times in his GOP convention performance.. after promising not to exploit the tragedy for politcal gain while the GOP was in NYC.

The Bush twins admitted that their father stood by, without intervention, to save their own hamsters life.

And.. (drum roll please), Arizona Rep. Shadegg, minimizes the pain and suffering of the mentally ill, by using it as a political slur in an effort to attack millions of Kerry supporters worldwide.

Did I miss anything??? :grr:

43. Do not trust right wing rags and throats -
Papers and voices of the right wing - do not trust them, do not be misled, move with caution. I read comments here about Tweety and Olberman changing. I was floored when I heard that USA Today, the volume publisher of right wing spin, gave Moore credentials for the convention.

It's not fun going around being suspicious of these nasty people, but it's safe. There up and down behavior and positions may even be part of an agenda to throw off the undecideds. Take someone who always follows Tweety or Imus. They sound like they are swinging towards Kerry so the undecides start following, then Tweety and Imus pull the carpet out from the undecideds by supporting Bush and there go those fragile undecideds. Take a look at Tweety and Imus's employer and take a look at where their employer's loyalty lies and think back about the years of assault on the Dems, then decide for yourself.

USA Today and MSNBC haven't been there for us for years so why should they start now. They have plenty of believers as it is. USA Today is worse than MSNBC because millions of people read/scan that paper and a small per cent watch Tweety - more hear Imus, than Tweety. Most people don't know who Olberman is, so it may be safe for MSNBC allow him a different voice, but he could switch those undecideds also.

Too bad. Was interesting monitoring their polling data.

I'm always a bit confused when the term "Anti-Christ" is applied to certain people. The Anti-Christ is supposed to be a very popular, influential person that most of the world's population follows. This is why I wouldn't give GW that back handed compliment, since his influence is limited to a minority in this country and has zero chance of spreading beyond our borders.

goes on

Not only are we treasonous, but also have mental health problems.

Folks...this is as close to American fascism as I want to get. Hitler did this to people he wanted to persecute...Simply divide the nation between race, religion, sexual orientation, etc....

Once you convince the masses that certain groups are not "mentally fit" to participate in your government you can have them detained (or worse). You can justify this by claiming that to keep "American Blood Pure" the undesirables must be removed from society.

The dream is to see to it that the blood of America remain pure as we cull the nation of gays, minorities, atheists, mentally challenged and socialists.

Somewhere along the line I thought we were all Americans who just happened to disagree on things. Guess not in the world of people like this.

I don’t know who will win this coming election, but to marginalize a group of people by calling to question their mental fitness simply because you believe they are not voting for a certain individual is beneath what I believe our nation deserves in our so-called leaders.

While people like you seek to divide our nation along a myriad of qualifiers, the first thing we are all is Americans. Rich and Poor, Black and White, Liberal and Conservative.

Besides your comment about Kerry voters being beyond arrogant it borders on the ineffectual. I continue to hear people on AM Talk radio right on up to the highest elected leaders in our land lampoon voices of opposition with such vitriolic disdain that it makes me wonder how much more time democracy has in our nation if left to people like you.

I long for the idea that instead of verbally attacking those with you do not agree, that you may seek refuge in the liberating place where one day you can actually understand their perspective. While you certainly don’t have to agree with it, you will find that a real understanding of differing viewpoints is quite a provoking experience even if that which is being said is something your profoundly hold in contempt.

You being a devout man (I guess), I trust you will continue to work for that which Jesus Christ himself worked for. Things like bringing peace to the world, tolerance, hope and help for the sick, the old, the weak, the dispossessed.

Oh yea there was one other thing that Jesus taught us humans and something you must have missed in your Sunday school classes. Jesus promoted the idea that you love of your enemies. Even as they are nailing him to the cross he pleads for them. I don’t ever remember anything in the Bible about Jesus seeking revenge on his enemies and I sure don’t remember him ridiculing their mentality either.

There isn’t anything more annoying than self-professed, pompous, sanctimonious hypocrites that beat their Bible non-stop while promoting policy and espousing ideas and philosophy that is in direct contradiction to what Jesus actually taught and got nailed to the cross for.

By the way, I am a John Kerry voter. I am proud of that. I don’t agree with him on everything. I wish he had not given Mr. Bush authority to wage an unconstitutional war on fallacious grounds. I have family members who will be voting for Bush. They are free to do that and I don’t call into question their mental capacity. However, they are clearer wrong (a sentiment they may have toward me).

One of the great things about America is our freedom. Sadly, people like you only support Freedom, The Flag, Our Soldiers insofar that it advances your Conservative agenda.

Sincerely
xxx

To me, it's therapy. A real impact maybe would be to have our letters sent to newspapers in Arizona, even to his right-wing district. Arizona is a battleground state and every nuance of illumination into the mind of these type of people will energize the Liberal base and bring moderates to the cause as well.

With all the things they have done to drag the US through the mud and then be able to get up with a straight face and say progress is being made. I just like to ask on what account to does any of them claim that true?

The only thing they are able to do, and have staked the whole operation of the party on, is blaming other people. They have done this for many, many years. Now that they have been at the reigns of total control of the federal government for a while, congress et al, what are saying. They were always trying to make the claim that they were the responsible party (the adults)for the longest time. What is their claim now?

General Blames Prison Abuse on Commanders

Saturday September 4, 2004 9:16 PM

By JIM KRANE

Associated Press Writer

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - The Army general who once ran detention operations in Iraq said a ``conspiracy'' among top U.S. commanders has left her to blame for the abuses of Iraqi inmates at Abu Ghraib prison.

Brig. Gen. Janis Karpinski, who commanded the Army's 800th Military Police Brigade, said she fears more senior Army generals may escape punishment, even though they issued or approved guidelines on the interrogation of Iraqi prisoners.

Karpinski said in an e-mail interview with The Associated Press that she was unfairly cited by a report issued last month by an independent panel of nongovernment experts headed by former defense secretary James Schlesinger.

The Schlesinger report blamed Karpinski for leadership failures that ``helped set the conditions at the prison which led to the abuses.'' She failed to ensure that Iraqi prisoners were protected by the Geneva Conventions and failed to deal with ineffective commanders below her. It recommended that she be relieved of command and given a letter of reprimand, which would essentially end her career.

78. His name isn't really "Shadegg"
He was born with the surname "Shithead" but had it legally changed to boost his electoral prospects.

110. Health
Take care of your daughter as best you can, as you have. It's very hard for family and for patients. It's a hard to treat disease, sometimes. Many medications and therapies to try, but you know all this better than I. Seems like the RNC convention was just a lot of loose lips flinging hurtful words. No heart and not conscience. Use yours.

85. We have some real mental giants here in Arizona
I don't know how we managed to elect Janet Napolitano, but we DID. Her opponent, Matt Salmon, a nice "Christian" fellow virtually accused her of being Lesbian and of releasing known child molesters on the public as attorney general. I am not kidding. I guess if a democratic woman can overcome that kind of crap in Arizona there is still plenty of hope for Kerry!

By the way, Napolitano rocks as governor.

96. Since when does an elected Rep. "instruct" delegates
to influence the press? I'm sorry to see that USA Today caved like they did. I don't recall an organized protest from any Democrats when Coulter was hired for the DNC. USA Today made the decision to 'go their separate ways' after she submitted her first column and refused to make any editorial changes.

Yes, the 'mental health problems' is terrible ...and intended to inflame. But the call to action he put on the delegates is even more troubling to me. Then acting as spokesperson to for a group of (unnamed) people threating to boycott if they don't get their way. :wtf: !!!!!

102. Have the Bushites brought politics to a new low?
Edited on Sun Sep-05-04 09:25 PM by Matilda
I'm certainly not an expert on American politics, although I follow
elections with interest, but I don't recall ever seeing before such
ugly slurs and character assassination. I don't doubt it's always
gone on behind the scenes, but I think this Republican Convention
is one of the slimiest political events I've ever witnessed
anywhere.

I hope that decent Republicans - there must be some hiding
somehwere - will desert this sleazy bunch if they don't want to see
their country irreparably damaged in the eyes of the world.

It's not a good image we're seeing.

Edit: sp.

Maybe I'll just send the Mark Yannone campaign $20.

Writing to Shadegg is probably like writing to a shad egg.

115. How in the world could any
thug tell the difference between sane and not? Is a fish able to figure out it is wet? If a thug won't read a book or go to a movie, how the hell is he even gonna know what's inside? Oh the sheer idiocy of these creatures...

118. Nobody...
but NOBODY, is as stupid, as easy to dupe, as gullible, as ignorant, as misinformed, as a rightwingnut American.

If they only knew how hard the rest of the world laughs and points at them every time the bushCartel open their mouths and spout another total lie that the rightwingnuts eagerly swallow and regurgitate...
