Davis winning the race for money
Davis winning the race for money
Actor's GOP rivals urged to drop out by key group

John Wildermuth, Chronicle Political Writer Saturday, August 23, 2003

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A powerful conservative group that pumped $200,000 into Republican Bill Simon's campaign for governor last year endorsed Arnold Schwarzenegger on Friday, saying the actor is the only Republican who can win the recall election to replace Democratic Gov. Gray Davis.

The decision by the Lincoln Club of Orange County to back Schwarzenegger in the Oct. 7 election is a stunning blow to the other prominent Republicans on the ballot -- Simon, state Sen. Tom McClintock, R-Thousand Oaks (Ventura County) and Orange County businessman Peter Ueberroth.

Tracy Price, president of the business-oriented club, said his group called Simon and McClintock Friday morning to urge them to drop out of the race. "We're very fond of those guys, and we've backed them in the past," he said. "But we don't believe either of them has enough dry powder to win this race."

The endorsement by the Orange County Lincoln Club -- a bastion of powerful support for conservative candidates like former Rep. Bob "B-1" Dornan -- represents a political gold ring for the moderate Schwarzenegger, whose positions on choice, guns, environmental and social issues appear to conflict with many of the long-held postions of many of the group's influential -- and monied -- members.

1. It's not about political philosophy.
It's about winning. They'd support Mickey Mouse if he'd assure them control of the State Government.

2. Support
You are right. The whole thing is nothing but a power grab. The Rethugs have no principles-they only desire power.

3. Yep
They want who they think can win, not who is best for the state, that shows you some of their motivation. Uberroth has some very sound ideas as far as the budget goes, and he has layed them out for people to see. They will not support this man because he is not part of the republican ideology. He is an actual conservative, a human being. Not a right wing ideologue.

9. I contend that they would support Satan.
But when word circulated that the Republican candidate is the *actual* Prince of Darkness, the people backing him would say "they really don't want religion to get mixed up into this". Of course - this is just dry speculation.

What it appears to be, really, is a horse race. They want to put their time and money into a winning candidate. Issues be damned. They just want their Republican stooge to win.

4. it's interesting how the deficit in California get's to be ...
a big deal while the republicans think the federal deficit isn't worth worrying about. I suppose it's because we had a Democrat in office when the California deficit happened.

5. Hopefully Gray will address this in his TV ads
This recall needs to hurt Bush badly going into 2004.

Even if the right wingers steal the office, they need to be punished like they've never been punished before. Davis and Democrats need to use this as a way to attack Bush's policies and his corruption.

6. Orange County Cali.
Haven't been there since I was a boy, but apparently the John Birch Society is alive and well, hiding in the Republican Party.

7. Umm... is there anything in this story of R infighting that
refers to Davis winning "race for money?"

Odd.

Headline doesn't match contents.

8. Don't get the title of the article - what did Davis win again?
It's all about GOP-ers downsizing - no good news for us here.
The essential response to GOP criticism: Davis REDUCED the deficit (from 38 to 8 billion). Then go on into the Enron thingy as per:

(can't post this often enough for the recall cheerleaders/Davis bashers on DU - they never address it, but maybe they'll read it)

10. The Dems need a TV ad where Arnold's face morphs into Dubya's
and then morphs into Ken Lay, and then morphs into Pete Wilson. Finish with a camera shot showing Arnold walking around on the podium with George Bush in Bush's re-election campaign of 1992.

The narrator would say something like:
"Isn't it ironic that the same people who just Enronized California out of 8 billion dollars, the same people who turned Clinton's prosperity into the biggest Republican national debt ever, those same failuers, the crooks who lost just lost America three million jobs now want to install their Republican stooge into power?"
