U.S. Media Reportedly Playing Down Iraq Casualties
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Big News Network.com Friday 3rd September, 2004

U.S. newspapers are moving stories of American troops dying in Iraq to the back pages, the Washington Monthly has reported.

The magazine noted in its September issue that on July 9, the Los Angeles Times put the story of five soldiers being killed on page 7 and the New York Times put it on page 8.

On July 22, the magazine said, The Washington Times headlined a story U.S. Troops Dying Two Per Day Since Turnover in Iraq, but only put it on page 10.

7. They will not allow it to happen during the convention. No other reason.
They would have started another war to diminish coverage for Kerry and the convention though.

3. The US media is playing down everything about this Iraqi war.
It is shameful and a disgrace to democracy. Meanwhile all you can hear is about the number of people arrested in NYC for peacefully protesting. Some "democracy" and some kind of "freedom."

8. I've noticed that.
I'm used to reading the New Orleans Times-Picayune, which if I remember correctly pretty much put every death at least somewhere on the front page with a headline, right down to individual deaths.

Flash forward to Baton Rouge, where the only paper I can get for free is the Baton Rouge Advocate (I can get the NY Times or the TimesPic but I don't have $1 in quarters everyday, and student government gets us free copies of The Advocate).

Anyway, the only way I read about troop deaths in The Advocate is buried in the national news, maybe from an AP report. It'll get maybe a sentence in a report about the standoff in Najaf, but nothing beyond that.

Ugh. 15 deaths last week? News to me!

22. NO Deaths During Convention
Nothing has been reported by CENTCOM or the DOD since 8/30.

I am glad none of our tropps have been killed or injured during this period. It is far better than the 2+ daily we have lost in recent months.

Oh wait:
<http://www.nola.com/newsflash/louisiana/index.ssf?/base/news-11/10942202446601.xml&storylist=louisiana>

Hey CENTCOM the RNC is over, you may resume reporting now. And make sure to carefully adjust the dates of deaths/wounded and also the memories of those who were there.

Not that I would call them lying F***s, but.....

there have been no reported US KIA in September. What do you want to bet, that next week there is a rash of humvee "accidents" and "non-combat related" deaths? 15 last week and it suddenly stops during the RNC? Man those Medhi Army guys were really kicking ass! If they call a truce and suddenly all the killing stops? Could this be that mythical "corner" Caligula was speeking of "turning"?

24. Sad but true
In several cases lately the families learned of the deaths in E-Mails from friends who were there. long before the DOD bothered to send out the usual car with two officers inside.

DISGUSTING

38. I was thinking the same thing..
it's my hunch the troops have all pulled back. The killing on both sides will resume when the repukes feel it is politically 'safe' to lose a few every now and then.

Yet a majority of troops, and families of troops are the repukes biggest supporters.

It's sad, but this is the country we live in.

21. Big Media is Big Business...
PERIOD!

They all want to chip in and do their part to get Bush re-elected.

I feel sorry for the famlies of all the soldiers in Iraq who when their son or daughter is killed they know the media is doing everything in their power to help the U.S. public forget them. Real patriotic.

Oh yeah, WE self-censor, instead of beetle-browed KGB guys forcing us to (it's so much cooler to get ahead of the Collaborator curve and not need to be told, ain't it?)

And we have better production values. 1978 Isvestia TV WISHES they had the fine mahogany desks and graphics OUR Lying Pravda Whores have.

27. The same thing happened in Nazi Germany.
The editors and publishers of newspapers insufficiently pro-Nazi were burned or bombed or "forclosed" out of business, while those who were strongly pro-Nazi were given large advertizing contracts and invited to Party galas and weekends on the yatch. Yeah, we've seen this before...
