LAS VEGAS (AP) - Vice President Dick Cheney portrayed Democrat John Kerry as a flip-flopper from the Northeast who doesn't understand the needs of the West. ``It's not only wildfires that shift with the wind,'' Cheney told supporters Friday.

``As westerners, the president and I understand the challenges that you face here in Nevada, especially when it comes to protecting residents from wildfire,'' Cheney said during his first post-convention campaign swing.

But Cheney said Kerry has a different view. ``He says he's in touch with the West,'' the Republican said with a smile before delivering the punch line. ``He must mean western Massachusetts.'' The president's home is Texas. Cheney is from Wyoming.

Must have been his compassionate side that made him do it.

4. I live in the West. I grew up in the West. The West is a friend of mine.
Mr. Cheney, you are NOT the West. And you don't know the West or you wouldn't bother with this election.

Cheney, the West knows you and the word on the streets of my corner of the rural West is  for you and your corporate pig cronies.

7. Dick, people live in the East, trees live in the West
Trees can't vote, otherwise, you'd have been thrown out of office a long time ago. And the people in Nevada haven't forgotten how you lied to get their vote in 2000.

"He must mean western Massachusetts."

oh that's just so funny, cheney. if your career as a mass-murdering greedy liar comes to an end (and you escape answering for your crimes), you have a bright future in comedy.

What a moron. A greedy, lying, mass-murdering moron.

12. Dick, this may be hard for you to comprehend, but we westerners like
a clean environment, wildlife, trees, and all those beautiful natural things that you and Bu$h have so assiduously tried to destroy in our western lands these past three plus years.

John Kerry understands that we love our beautiful, natural, clean environment, and will help us safeguard our environmental legacy.

Republicans like you don't, never have, and never will. All you ever do is lay our lands to waste for money.

Oh, yeah, and that Yucca Mtn. nuke dump you want to put in Nevada?

Shove it. You know where.

LAS VEGAS, Nevada (CNN) -- Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry used a stop in Nevada Tuesday to criticize President Bush's support for a nuclear waste dump there and to accuse the Bush administration of placing ideology ahead of science.

Kerry accused Bush of breaking a promise he made as a presidential candidate in 2000 to oppose the creation of a facility for nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain, about 100 miles northwest of Las Vegas, unless it was scientifically safe.

In July 2002, Bush signed a bill designating the site as the nation's central repository for radioactive waste.

"The person I am running against in this race, the president, came here to Nevada, stood up in front of Nevada and made a promise to Nevada that this waste would not come to Yucca Mountain and to Nevada," Kerry said. "And within weeks and months, that was reversed."

Opponents say the site is not safe and that waste shipments from commercial nuclear power stations and government nuclear weapons plants would put millions of Americans in jeopardy and provide tempting targets for terrorists. They also point to studies by the General Accounting Office, the investigative arm of Congress, that criticized the Energy Department's handling of the project.
