(CPOD) Sept. 5, 2004 – Opposition politician Mark Latham has a higher performance rating than prime minister John Howard in Australia, according to a poll by Roy Morgan Research. 58 per cent of respondents approve of how Latham is handling his job as leader of the Australian Labour Party (ALP).
Howard has headed the Australian government since March 1996. 50 per cent of respondents approve of his performance as prime minister, a three per cent increase since mid-August.
Last month, Howard was the target of criticism for his past behaviour regarding the so-called "Children Overboard" affair. On Oct. 7, 2001, just days before the last parliamentary ballot, the Australian government claimed that disturbing actions had taken place in a boat filled with asylum-seekers. Various reports alleged that adults in the vessel threw children into the Indian Ocean.
After the election—which resulted in a new mandate for Howard’s coalition of Liberals and Nationals—the government admitted that the initial claims on the matter were unsubstantiated. The prime minister has repeatedly stated that he was not aware of any inconsistencies until after the vote took place. <snip>
