Sergio Vieira de Mello nominated for Nobel peace prize
Two Brazilian senators have nominated the United Nations envoy to Iraq, Sergio Vieira de Mello, to receive a posthumous Nobel peace prize.

Earlier in Rio de Janeiro, UN secretary-general Kofi Annan delivered the eulogy at a private memorial service for Sergio Vieira de Mello, who was one of 23 people killed on Tuesday in a bomb attack on the UN offices in Baghdad.

The only person to be honoured with a posthumous peace prize was the second UN secretary-general, Dag Hammarskjöld.

1. Whoa! That is a bit much
Are Nobel prizes being given out like the sympathy lifetime awards at the Oscars?

Can someone tell me what he will be nominated for? Not his work in Iraq I hope.

Think what you want, but the Iraq war even happening is a failure on the part of the UN. It is a tragedy that de Mello died, not a triumph.

2. You probably need to read up on him...
he is considered a national hero in East Timor. They're going to build a monument to him, in fact.

3. I was watching news last week and on one of the network news,
not sure which one, they said that on the last cell phone call he made while he was still trapped, he begged for the UN not to pull out of Iraq. His last thoughts were for the Iraq people.

That says it all for me as to what kind of a human soul he was. May he rest in peace.

5. Did the Chimp ever mention him or make a speech about those who died in UN
I haven't heard him say a word. Did I miss it? Shouldn't he have said something?? What about Tony Blair....did anyone here him say a word about UN Humanitarian Aid workers dying because of "The Invasion & Occupation."

I think it's shocking if neither has said a word on this. Maybe I missed it.

6. Well, at least it's a step up from a Nobel Peace Prize to Arafat.
That's progress I guess.
