Nearly half of Kansas House races uncontested
Nearly half of Kansas House races uncontested

JOHN HANNA

Associated Press

TOPEKA, Kan. - Nearly half of the races for the Kansas House are uncontested in this year's general election.

With Labor Day traditionally starting the campaign season and all 125 seats to be filled Nov. 2, 40 Republicans and 19 Democrats face no opposition. The number is in keeping with trends in recent years, though the number of uncontested races has increased since the early and mid-1990s.

"The number is still amazingly high to me," Secretary of State Ron Thornburgh said during a recent interview.

All 40 Senate seats also are on the ballot. Seven Republicans and one Democrat, David Haley, of Kansas City, face no opposition.

4. A dominant single party and gerrymandering...

Are the primary factors why there are so many uncontested races in Kansas. It's just as bad in the city and county races and not just with the state house races.

Plus, a lot of independents are essentially Republicans, who already comprise around 60% of all registered voters in the state. The Republicans almost never cross party lines, and the Democrats know that. Democrats won't run because there is no hope of winning, regardless of who the opponent is.

Still, the state did manage to elect a Democratic governor (due to name recognition and a Nazi on the Republican ticket).

However, there's no chance any candidate on my Election Day ballot will win, which is just infuriating given that I'm in the heart of a middle class section of the city.

5. Right now, it's almost impossible for a Dem to win in KS.
Watch what happens in TX in a few years with their successful gerrymander.
