Some in South Dakota think accident will end Janklow's political career
Some in South Dakota think accident will end Janklow's political career
Bob von Sternberg, Star Tribune

Published August 24, 2003 JANK24

FLANDREAU, S.D. -- South Dakotans started referring to Bill Janklow in the past tense last week.

As in: You always knew where you stood with Bill. . . . He did everything he could to help this state. . . . Bill was a legend in South Dakota. . . . He'd give you the shirt off his back.

It might seem an odd way to talk about someone who is very much alive and the most towering figure in South Dakota politics.

But the verb tense people used to talk about Janklow changed in an instant last weekend, when he drove his Cadillac through a stop sign 10 miles south of Flandreau, his hometown. A motorcyclist from Hardwick, Minn., who did not face a stop sign, was killed in the accident, which many say might destroy Janklow's political career.

"I think it's doomed," said James Meader, a pollster and political scientist at Augustana College in Sioux Falls. "His career is likely to end soon, with resigning or retirement his only options." (snip/...)

Wave bye-bye to Janklow!

1. What I find absolutely amazing is that some would vote for him again
and not even look at the fact that he killed a man but crucify Clinton for having oral sex.

Now, if we just take the men in South Dakota, most of them would not ever consider killing a man but you must admit that a few think about having oral sex!

6. well it should
it's hard to serve in office from behind bars.

This guy is a scumbag even without committing serial reckless endangerment and now murder due to his own egocentric behavior and sense of priveleged entitlement.

Get him out of public life before he kills someone else.

South Dakota Governor Declares
War on Indians
Black Hills AIM
April 5, 2000

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Calling a U.S. Civil Rights Commission report "garbage" and "fiction," Gov. Bill Janklow blasted the week-old report that labels South Dakota race relations a crisis.

Increasing already explosive tensions on the State's 9 Lakota Sioux reservations, where grassroots natives have taken over the Tribal Council administration building in Pine Ridge for 2 months, prompting Asst. Interior Secretary Kevin Gover last week to threaten economic and military force to remove the hundreds of protesters, the Governor's angry denunciation of the CRC report amounts to a further declaration of war.

The report, titled 'Native Americans in South Dakota: an erosion of confidence in the justice system', was released March 29 after 6 months of investigations into a series of unsolved murders of Indians throughout the State.

A hearing in Rapid City in December by the Commission, headed by President Clinton's appointee Mary Frances Berry, heard testimony not only from scores of Natives but also local, state, and federal cops and lawyers about the many suspicious deaths: 6 Indian men have been found dead in Rapid Creek over the last 2 years and are being investigated as homicides; 2 Indian men were found dead in a field near Pine Ridge; another Indian was stuffed head first in a trash can in Mobridge and died; and another was run over in Sisseton by a white man. No suspects have been arrested in the Rapid City and Pine Ridge cases, but 4 young whitemen were released in the Mobridge case and another whiteman got a light sentence for the hit-and-run in Sisseton. All the cases involved alcohol

10. I REFUSE to call this an accident..
....as a newsie, I have often argued with colleagues over the term 'accident.'
I much prefer 'crash' or 'collision.'
An 'accident' is when somebody spills milk, or you mix clothes in the wash and get the light stuff tinted.
A 'crash' or 'collision' is less restrictive and allows room for the utter foolishness of one or more involved.

The father of a friend of my daughter just returned to Minn. after serving SIX YEARS in prison in South Dakota for his role in a fatal crash. He was not drunk, just careless.

Janklow deserves something like that kind of a sentence -- provided the facts presented so far are accurate.

This is the logical end to his career of posturing as a swashbucklin' rebel outlaw personal liberty 'they can't tell me what to do' public figure. It was always bullshit.

St. Paul

Weird thing: Russell Means, former AIM activist and one of the Wounded Knee occupation organizers, recently declared Janklow to be his friend. Janklow issued a pardon for his earlier convictions on Wounded Knee charges, allowing him to get a passport and thus make films outside the U.S. Probably the one thing Janklow did right in his career.

14. In the initial reports of the crash it was said he went around a car
stopped at the intersections stop sign..at 70 MPH. If that is correct then the later reports have been sanitized to make the eminent dropping of charges for the favorite sons of privilege more palatable.

16. Is that really him? Damn. He looks like he just caught a whiff of
something really stinky. Damn. My sis was married in South Dakota.
I got off the plane and remarked about the cold and was told that it was "only" ten below zero, not nearly cold enough to crack a vinyl car seat.
