Democrat Dean Gets 'In Your Face' with Bush
BOISE, Idaho (Reuters) - Democrat Howard Dean, the outsider whose presidential campaign has suddenly caught fire, said on Sunday the only way his party could beat George W. Bush next year was "to be in the president's face."

The former Vermont governor, whose anti-war rhetoric and liberal stance are clearly to the left of his Democratic rivals, saw no need to moderate his tone or his message despite their warnings that he would lead the party back into the "political wilderness."

"I think my message is a centrist message and is where most American are," he told reporters aboard his aircraft on a profile-raising coast-to-coast political swing. "I don't expect Democrats or Republicans to accept that yet."

On his first foray into presidential-style travel, Dean ventured close to the press section of his aircraft -- a 60s-era Boeing 737 chartered from Casino Express Airlines based in Elko, Nevada -- before going in to face reporters.

1. Bullshit
"The former Vermont governor, whose anti-war rhetoric and liberal stance are clearly to the left of his Democratic rivals"

Clearly to the left? He's pro-gun, pro-death penalty and a deficit hawk. How the f*ck does that make him 'clearly to the left?' This is just the mindless repetition of DNC/GOP anti-Dean talking points.

9. ever been to Idaho?
I have, many times. No offense to the dozen or so Democrats left in Idaho, but this state has gone from the glory of the late Senator Frank Church and Governor Cecil Andrus, who were progressive politicians, to Senator Mike Crapo and Governor Dirk Kempthorne, millionaires who have benefited from federal farming subsidies. I used to love Idaho, but it now has been turned into a complete agricultural shithole by our Republican friends, thanks to massive subsidies from the federal government that enriches guys like J.R. Simplot. Read "Fast Food Nation" for more.

Whoever wrote this story is a GOP shill.

BTW, Dean is on his way here, and I am going to see him speak within the hour. Report later.

16. Add to that...
That Idaho has several nuclear testing and manufacturing facilities, owned and operated not only by the government, but also by Bush supporting Republican corporations. With all of the work being planned by Herr Rumsfeld to manufacture mini-nukes, the wingers in Idaho are salivating at the prospect. Idaho is, and has been for years, and overwhelmingly Republican state.

5. Reporters can't get past labels
So we'll just have to go around them! The tone of the article is favorable, imo. But I'm not comfortable with seeing all the details of his plane in print :scared:

8. I agree, party_line.
It left me with a positive impression of Dean. It placates the right' penchant for labelling while quoting some good Dean. And his words are the fighting truth. At least it isn't completely negative. Baby steps.

10. I have never seen such detail about a campaign airplane.
That is so very strange--it's almost like they put it in there so that when/if it meets with a deliberate mishap there will be too many places to look for the culprit because that information was publicized.

Dean needs to get a different airplane from a different charter service, in my opinion.

11. I know what you mean about the "labels" and "the plane"...
reporters who do this should get another profession!

And I want Dean to Not get on small planes.

We've lost too many good People!

7. Dean
Dean was on Meet the Werewolf Blitzer today also. Blitzer was doing his best Tim Russert imitation and asked some stupid questions. Dean remained Dean and didn't let him get away with anything. Blitzer pushing the too far to the left position (according to Lierberman) and Dean told him he is a centrist. I think Wolfie should go to work for Fox.

4. If Dean is far left....
then the political debate has shifted WAY too far to the right. If Roosevelt, Truman, Johnson, or Carter ran today they would be considered Soviet spies lol.

6. Who the hell is that reporter
Edited on Sun Aug-24-03 01:02 PM by ewagner
Okay. disclaimers up front: I am not a Dean supporter.

However, this is one of the most biased pieces of journalism I have seen in a long time. From the nasty comments about the extra "1/2 inch" in his hieght to the sorrowfully obvious allusion to the '60s vintage plane (get it? Dean is a relic of the '60s?) to the reference to "red meat for the left wing", this reporter was wholly unprofessional and had an unveiled bias against Dean.

on edit: The reporter is Patricia Wilson....anybody know of anything else she has written?

12. The reporter thinks the fake grass resembles "shallots"....
"The Grassroots Express" should have trays of wheatgrass on board and People could chew on them, too! :-)

Now we know how tall Dean is..5'8" and 3 quarters! Medium height..

I always say I'm 5'4" and a quarter...I guess I'm vain! :-)
