Aryan Nations founder Richard Butler dies

Richard G. Butler, the notorious white supremacist who founded the Aryan Nations and was once dubbed the "elder statesman of American hate," has died at the age of 86, authorities said Wednesday.

Butler died peacefully in his sleep, sheriff's Capt. Ben Wolfinger told The Associated Press. The time of death was not immediately known.

Butler, a longtime admirer of Adolf Hitler and white supremacist religious teaching, had moved to Idaho in the early 1970s, claiming later that he was impressed by its high percentage of white residents. To the dismay of many locals, the region became known as a place hospitable to white supremacist groups.

Butler's church held that whites are the true children of God, that Jews are the offspring of Satan and that blacks and other minorities are inferior.

The compound drew skinheads, ex-convicts and others from the fringes of society. Over the years, Butler's disciples included some of the most notorious figures in the white supremacist movement.

It's not illegal to be a racist asshole, according to that whole tradition centered around the 1st Amendment.

I was being sarcastic about this country and who they perceive as terrorist and who they don't. The administration just said to Putin that he should sit down with the terrorist for a talk. Butler, born in Colorado and trained as an aeronautical engineer, claimed he became admirer of Hitler while serving the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. He said Hitler "led a nation, a division of our race, to fight for the life of our race."

Have found love somewhere in his heart. I can only hope that his bitter soul found the light of love for all people before he died. To have died with such hate and anger would have eaten a once full soul alive. Its amazing what pain we will inflict when we believe that we have the right to condemn others for being different than ourselves.

He was a human being, and started off in life as a beautiful, innocent kid like we all have. He ended life as an insane hate-spewing dirtbag. He has a lot of bad shit that he learned in life, to un-learn, and a lot of consequences to face in the afterlife or the next life. As we all have to face, just on a grander scale in his case.

Again, what's the point? Do you feel better having spit on someone's grave? Does it make up for your inaction against him during his life?

I am not defending him. He caused much harm in the world, and led many people down a very dark path. We should not rejoice his death, but mourn another sick, wasted life.

However, we may differ as to what kind of action would have been appropriate. I believe Richard Butler, like all racists, was a man who should have been given love. Love is the great persuader. Racism is caused by bitterness and a lack of love in one's life.

Butler had most of the wind knocked out of his sails up here in north Idaho, thanks to Morris Dees. However, there are scarier groups scattered around here and the rest of the nation that are worse than Butler's Aryan group. Thank goodness they're only a few percentage of the entire population. Mostly the people up here are wonderful, warm and friendly, given that they are mostly conservatives.
