Poll results fuel call for Republican unity around Schwarzenegger
SAN FRANCISCO (AP)

A new poll showing Democratic Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante well ahead of Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger in the race to succeed Gov. Gray Davis if he is recalled has prompted top Republicans to warn that the party must unite behind Schwarzenegger or risk keeping the state's top office in Democratic hands.

The Los Angeles Times poll showed Bustamante with 35 percent support among likely voters, compared to 22 percent for Schwarzenegger. Collectively, three other Republican candidates had 25 percent support.

"The headline here is that Republicans are winning but the vote is split, so pressure by Republicans to coalesce behind a single candidate will be greater than ever," said Allan Hoffenblum, a former Republican strategist. "It's a competitive race, and it needs to be turned into a two-person race between Schwarzenegger and Bustamante." ---

1. Hold out, rigidly moralistic repubs! Vote your hearts!
Screw pragmatism. Don't let 'em push you around! Show them how unhappy you are and let them know you won't take it anymore, even if it splits the party. At least your message will be received!

3. I wonder if conservatives will stay home or hold their noses
and vote for Arnold, or stay home.

6. Time to encourage dissent
I was going to call Bill Simon's office and "volunteer" the day he withdrew. Time to get behind Mclintock now.

8. Simon's still on the ballot - so he's still useful
And remember he's got more legitimate name recognition than any other Republican candidate.

7. They do certainly seem upset about this (web site)

The other day I receieved this highly expectant email, replete with spelling errors:

First let me say how gracious and selfless Simon was in stepping aside for the greater good of the party and state. I respect Simon for doing so and he may have gained an opportunity next year against Boxer. I want to invite you into Arnold's camp. There's a lot of misinformation out there about Arnold's conservative credentials. I wanted to set the record straight- for a complete analysis on Arnold's politics (hint: he is No "liberal"), please visit:

http://www.arnoldgovernor.net/insidescoop.htm .

And please pass this link on to any and all other Simon supporters who are considering joining Team Arnold.

This election should be focused on who can we trust to get California out of the economic mess we are in. California has the 5th largest GDP in the world, yet we are one step from our state bonds bieng classified as junk bonds. What we need is a canidate who will bring both businesses and jobs back to California. Someone that can put us back on the track of prosperity. Arnold's strong business exerience and economic council is the answer. His emphasis is on the right issue: create the condition for economic growth and job creation.

Now, we need to train our attention on Cruz Bustamante and prevail on October 7th. We need to back a winner and Arnold offers our best chance against Bustamante. I am looking forward to your support of Arnold. Can BillSimon.org (I don't know if it's an unofficial site) put some text in support of Arnold and link to his campaign site- http://www.joinarnold.com. This would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Bob

Comment:
Your website on Bill Simon is quite "scintillating", but your barely-concealed sarcasm is a bit too obvious. The Democratic Party IS truly the party of Sex, Lies, and Scurrilous Websites. Your work would make Joseph Goebbles proud.
