Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean, venturing deep into Bush country, delighted Austin supporters Monday by criticizing the president on the economy, foreign policy and other topics.

"We're going to have a little fun at the president's expense here," Dean told about 500 supporters who paid at least $125 each to pack into a boisterous event at the Ruta Maya Coffee House in South Austin.

Dean's Austin stop was part of his four-day "Sleepless Summer Tour" that touched down in Washington state earlier Monday and in San Antonio for a night rally after the Austin event.

It didn't take much for Dean to draw a wildly enthusiastic reaction from the Austin crowd.

He started by lighting into Bush on the state of the nation's economy.

1. Kick
:kick:

"After the speech, Dean told reporters that he's proud of the Democratic state senators who fled to New Mexico to block Republican efforts to draw new congressional districts. Dean referred to the redistricting effort as "this ridiculous nonsense of trying to steal an election."

5. how do you pack 500 into the Ruta Maya coffeehouse?
unless they've expanded it since I lived there. That place was about as big as my living room.

Uh-oh, scandal brewing. Dean breaks law, fills coffeehouse to over-capacity!

8. they did expand and move maggrwaggr
This is not the Ruta Maya location that used to be downtown on 4th and Lavaca. They sold that location and that coffee house is now called halcyon. The original owners then set up their import/export coffee business and coffeehouse in South Congress. I do mean south, like south of St. Edward's University. A newly restored area near there goes by the name of Penn field and that's where our new and improved Ruta Maya is now located. Nice digs, same old independent fair trade coffee service.
