'Beat me once a week' says Iranian woman
London Evening Standard
22 September 2004

An Iranian woman, beaten every day by her husband, asked a court to tell him only to beat her once a week.

Maryam, the middle-age woman, said she did not want to divorce her husband because she loved him.

"Just tell him to beat me once a week ... Beating is part of his nature and he cannot stop it," Maryam told the court.

The Tehran court found the man guilty and banned him from beating the wife, the paper said. "If I do not beat her, she will not be scared enough to obey me," the husband said.

Edited on Wed Sep-22-04 09:44 AM by rocknation
Sounds a lot like what Bush is doing to us. Randi Rhodes has compared Bush to the abusive husband who warns his wife that she'll end up with someone who'll treat her worse if she leaves him.

Keep in mind, these types of things are the "Good Old Days" Dumbya and company want to revive...

37. Actually, that's a myth.
The phrase 'rule of thumb' does not originate with English Common Law as is often claimed. It originated with woodworkers, who knew their trade so well that they rarely bothered to use a ruler, instead making measurements with their thumbs.

Edited on Wed Sep-22-04 10:06 AM by Aidoneus
You should be ashamed of yourself for speaking such ridiculous lies.

The Islamic Republic's court obviously thinks differently from you, for the man was found at fault.

The sharia has little do with this except in the proper ruling that was made by the court. The man is clearly an asshole, and the woman a fool. I see pairs like that on the show COPS all the time:--a man is beating his wife, the cops show up after being called by the neighbors, the woman takes his side and he passes out in a beer-stained wifebeater. Idiots abound.

Check it for yourself.

That's what Muslim women are fighting against today. Relgious tolerance of marital abuse.

13. Then you know the Koran says "up to 100 blows" is ok.
The only insane ramblings are from those who condone religion as a means of oppressing women.

Sharia Law treats women like herd animals in the desert and gives men carte blanche to exonerate their abuse in the name of God.

26. What does it say in the Bible?
Doesn't it say to beat your wife if she mentions she's menstruating? Or is that you're supposed to kill your wife?

Wait a minute. I think the Bible says your supposed to beat your wife if she mentions it in private, kill her if she mentions it in public.

I'll have to check on that.

It does say that a woman is unclean while she's menstruating, and that she cannot appear before the altar. If she does, she's supposed to be stoned. With rocks. Not that she's supposed to toke up. You know what I mean.

42. The Koran does not say that...
Good God. Muhammad was actually a feminist of his time and allotted for a woman to have rights. That little piece of information is just left out most of the time by these fundamentalist idiots who apparently decided to ignore the part where Muhammad said women are to be treasured, or something like that. It happens here in christianity too. NO WHERE in the bible does it say that men can beat their wives into submission, but it doesn't stop them from saying it.

45. He was such a feminst
That he REALLY did not mean these things, right?

(Koran 4:15) If two men among you commit indecency (sodomy) punish them both. If they repent and mend their ways, let them be. Allah is forgiving and merciful.

(Koran 4:16) If any one of your women is guilty of lewdness ...confine them until death claims them.

(Koran 4:34) ...As to those women on whose part ye fear disloyalty and ill-conduct, admonish them, refuse to share their beds and BEAT THEM...

(Al Hadis, Vol. 2, p. 686) Ibn Masud reported, "We were fighting with the Messenger of Allah, and our wives were not with us. We asked the Messenger of Allah, 'Should we castrate ourselves?' The Holy Prophet forbade us from that, and then he allowed us Muta (temporary) marriage. So, we all married wives for a fixed time (usually three days) for the dowry of a piece of cloth."

(Al Hadis, Vol 2, p. 651) Abu Hurairah reported that the Messenger of Allah said, "No woman shall give a woman in marriage, nor shall a woman give herself in marriage. Verily, the fornicatress is she that marries by herself."

(Al-Hadis, Vol. 3, p. 137) Abu Sayeed al-Khodri reported that Mohammed was talking to a group of women when he said, "... I see the majority of you will go to Hell." The women asked why, to which Mohammed responded, "You often curse and are ungrateful to your companions." He then told them they had a basic defect in their nature, to which they responded, "How?" Mohammed answered, "Is not the attestation (knowledge and witness) of a women only worth half of a man's? And that is on account of her short intelligence."

46. I said OF HIS DAY...and that's saying a LOT!
(And I was also quoting a text book). Christianity says the same thing about that stuff, except Christ never tells anyone to beat their women. They told women not to speak or witness for centuries in christianity. IT's changed now because the world has changed. Apparently, I was wrong about the beating thing. But at least they don't say beat your wives because they need to be subservient. At least he says if she's disloyal or does something stupid. :eyes: /sarcasm off.

The plight of women (I gave a presentation about the Taliban a year before 9/11, and nobody had ever heard of them, nor did they really give a damn)? Or the use of women's "barbaric treatment" to justify colonial intervention?

17. What a horrible culture, we should invade & take over their country
and replace their government with one we like MUCH better.

You know, like in afghanistan, where the now-in-power Northern Alliance holds their beheadings OUTSIDE the soccer stadiums; being a new, progressive government, and all.

And like in iraq where their new leader, Allawi kindly executes people with a bullet to the head instead of the groin.

It's that compassionate conservatism.

We had a gentleman who beat his wife on a regular basis. We responded to that address at least once a month. His wife happen to be a girl i dated in hi-school. The last call i got to that address, my partner and i took said gentleman, out in the county and convinced him it was in his best interest not to ever touch her again. They are still married and he's never touched her again.
I know what we did was wrong.

"Women who have been pressing for expanded rights were infuriated when in August a 16-year-old girl was hanged for adultery in the northern city of Neka, while the man with whom she was accused of having a sexual relationship received 100 lashes. Amnesty International said the young woman was not thought to be mentally competent."

Iran tries to reverse gains made by women
Nazila Fathi NYT Thursday, September 23, 2004

TEHRAN The hard-liners who won Iran's parliamentary elections in February have focused on women's rights in their efforts to reverse some of the liberalization carried out under the moderate president, Mohammad Khatami.
.
After the legislative session began in June, the 290-member Parliament, including all 12 of the women, abruptly rejected proposals to expand the inheritance right of Iranian women and to adopt the United Nations convention that bans discrimination against women. They also backed away from previous efforts to make "gender equality" a goal of the country's next four-year development plan.
.
Instead, the new Parliament has called for placing more restrictions on women's attire and social freedoms.

In other reports about the 16 year old girl it was alleged that the judge had her hanged "because she had a sharp tongue" and admonished the court for dismissing her evidence that it was not adultery but rape. The UK's Sunday Times rant this story in August. Sorry can't find the link - it was on my bookmarks that are now wiped.........
